I am not much of the romantic kind and there are things I do ordinarily because I feel it's just a normal thing to do but they turned out to be something romantic in the end.

Image was captured by me.

George Dee is someone who looks after a lot of people well being and even when I am so busy with my problems, the thoughts of people still cross my mind and I hate it when I can't reach them by any means. To reduce the stress of reaching out to a lot of people individually, I sometimes draft a short message and send it to everyone or sometimes I just send an image I created by myself asking about their wellbeing.

I do not feel like a romantic person but people around me make me feel like I am when I offer to cook meals instead of eating out or whenever I send gifts unexpectedly, especially to the opposite gender. My mom once told me that I remind her of my dad when they were still dating, and the expression on her face tells it all.

I do not intend to write about my family or fiancée because they see more of me from time to time so I would love to share a kind gesture I showed that turned out to be a romantic one.

This happened about four years ago...

I have this girl who is younger than me, we were initially colleagues about a decade ago when were teenagers but our relationship went from being friends to something stronger. She is more of a family to me now and I appreciate her a lot.

We barely see or communicate because she was in school then and I am not the type who loves to chat always. She came home for the holidays and told me that she was around.
She wanted us to meet and I had no excuse because my workplace was just about a 15-20 minute ride to her house. I didn't go and there was no concrete excuse for that.

It happened that her birthday was in a few days so I decided to see her on that day. I closed early at work but the traffic was something else so I got to her place later than I expected.

Instead of going to her apartment, I went to an eatery in her neighborhood and told her to join me there. It was the first time hanging out like that with her so she was wondering what I was up to.
She arrived and I went to receive her with a hug.

"Hey Dee, what's up with you? You acting too sweet since today started", she said with a broad smile on her face.

I smiled and replied, "I just wanted to make your day special, nothing more".

"That's so sweet of you", she responded.

I wanted to place an order for food but she chose to chat first so I got us juice and we talked about our lives, my relationship, work, her studies, and lots more.

The food came later and we ate each plate together, people stared at us for a while and they must be thinking we just started a relationship or something. By the time we were done, it was dark already so I saw her off before taking a bus but the moment was too beautiful that she didn't want it to end.

She walked me back to the bus station and as I said my goodbye, she hugged me again. It was a long one, we were stuck for over a minute because I definitely won't be seeing her again for about a year.

Nigerians are good lookers, and I felt uncomfortable hugging for a long at the bus-stop.

We held each other hands and talked more at the bus station before I left. On getting home, she chatted me up just to say thank you for making her day special.

Her confession at the end of the chat made me brought back the beautiful memories we shared when we were teenagers.

"I know I can't date you even when we had the chance because I don't ever want to lose you..."

She has told me this several times and I understand her. Back then, she felt like we might get into a quarrel as lovers and we might not be able to settle it so it was better to remain as friends forever.

..." but today, you made me wish I did took my chance when we became friends. You remain one of the best men I have known, best friends for life".

I choose the best friend deal and despite life putting us further apart in distance with every progress we make in life, we still hold each other close to the heart.
