Kauai Nostalgia Edition
It's been five whole years since I visited The Garden Isle. In the Rona Age travel has been rather changed and when a certain feed on a certain social network reminded me that five years ago this week that I was existentially traversing Kauai's wonders, well, I got a little reminiscent one might say.
The journey, while magical enough, was even more spectacular because my husband is Native Hawaiian and one half of his family hails from Kauai. We not only got to experience one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but also got to see how his family belonged to and shaped the story.
Right now I would love a big plate lunch with some slightly fermented poi, I adore the purple wallpaper paste, and would be tickled to see my kid's faces as they try lychee Boba tea again.
But honestly, the thing I miss the most is the ocean. Growing up in Southeast Alaska meant the northern Pacific was a constant in my life, and going to Kauai showed me the more hospitable (and much much warmer) side to that massive body of water.
Right now my farm is soggy and melty snow laden. what I wouldn't give to squish my toes into some sun warmed golden sand.
Just the geographic features of the island alone make it a destination worth heading too!
And for my eventual return trip, I have a few waterfall hikes planned, for nothing is nicer than punishing your corpse with a grueling hike only to have a mist-laden cascade to cool off under.
Yep, it has been far too long since I have smelled the exotic flower perfumed air and breathed in the sublime scent of Kauai. As soon as this pandemic is over I am heading over there with the fam for a bit of Aloha-tinged healing.
