I've done the same thing for almost twenty years; I refer to my profession. I work in the property industry at executive level currently and, whilst I've done a couple of different roles with the residential, commercial and property development sectors, it has all been within the property industry. I'm good at my job, it comes naturally, and after so many years I have gained a vast amount of knowledge as you would expect, making me effective and efficient.

I've had a lot of success within the industry and have found great enjoyment however lately I've been feeling a little disenchanted about it; I've not been having fun and even success doesn't seem to mean much anymore. I'm basically going through the motions I suppose. Going through the motions isn't how I want to live my life in any aspect including my work scenario though and so I'm thinking about a change.

The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking. - Albert Einstein

I'm comfortable at work; I perform my job with relative ease and meet my budgets comfortably, but is that enough? No it isn't for me. I need to feel passionate about what I do, to feel engaged with it, and that's not how I'm feeling. So, a change is on the horizon...But it's not a smooth road I'm considering, the road of change.

I am in discussions with a friend of mine who operates in a completely different industry - We've floated a few ideas around me coming on board to help drive his business, to increase revenue and to pivot it in new directions. I'll be honest, it will be a stretch for me and will require a lot of effort, new skills and a hefty time-investment. I'm ok with that of course as I've never been one to shy away from a challenge.

Staying within my comfort zone is the easiest course of action; It allows me to float along with little turmoil or pressure, earn an income and have the ability to auto-pilot to some degree. I don't have any passion for what I do though, and that doesn't work well for me so this is not much of an option.

I don't know where things will lead. In these uncertain times there's just no guarantees of anything and predicting the future is certainly something only a fool would proclaim to be able to do. What is certain for me though is change, and changing my thinking as our friend Albert Einstein mentions above.

The road won't be smooth, in fact, I'm expecting the complete opposite. Along with a change of job-function will come challenge and for me rising to a challenge has an energising effect. Setting new goals, and plans to reach them, is an invigorating experience for me and that's what I feel I need right now.

Things are progressing in the right direction currently so I'll keep y'all updated but I'm interested to hear if any of you have made similar mindset and career changes. I guess new directions in an area of study or life could also qualify also as similar processes are involved. Feel free to comment below and let me know how things worked out, how you handled the change and what challenges you faced along the way.
