The World Is Your Oyster

have always thought that, “The world is your oyster.” was such a strange saying.” Why would some one say that? I turned to life science.com to make sure I understood just how a pearl is made inside an oyster.

Pearls, naturally made that is, begin inside an oyster’s shell. Something irritating, such as a grain of sand or a bit of floating food gets in between one of the two shells of the oyster and the mantle, which is the protective layer that covers and protects the oysters organs, and begins to irritate the oyster.

Because it hurts, the way an oyster protects itself from this irritation is to quickly coat the foreign object with layers of a mineral substance called nacre. This substance is also know as mother-of-pearl and puts layers and layers on the object until a beautiful pearl is formed. Cultured pearls are made in a similar way except the “pearl farmer” puts the irritant in the oyster.

Wow. Now let’s talk life. We begin our life inside our mothers womb, maybe like an irritant, (if you have ever been pregnant you will understand way more than our male friends!) Kicking and stretching the mother covers it with amniotic fluid and a beautiful little human being immerses. And so life begins…

As we go throughout our lives we get irritants in us. Harsh worked, abuse, people who do not even understand the word deference are there every day. And let’s not forget the “pearl farmer” who purposefully irritates us.

Sometimes we coat the irritant with layers, and keep shoving it down and never deal with the real issue. It stays lumpy and irritable immersing every so often to remind us that it is there and staying there. The goal of the oyster is to stop the irritation but even though it doesn’t know it it is creating something beautiful, and of great worth.

The best way to “coat” our irritants is to deal with them in a healthy manor. Instead of using nacre to coat our irritants we need to use forgiveness, understanding and wisdom. We also are creating something of great worth. The experiences that we have in life and the irritants that we have had are the very things that make us who we are. We are the road builders for those who go behind us and our wisdom because of our irritants is invaluable to them.

Pearls are beautiful, precious objects and a price was paid to make them. You too are a beautiful, precious object and have also paid a price. When you come across an irritant in your life take a second and breathe, you really do not know what that person is dealing with so try to treat them with the same kindness you would want them to treat you with.

Those past wounds? Let them go and begin to coat them with forgiveness. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you ever let anyone treat you like that again, it just give you the freedom of letting it go. You take responsibility for holding on to the pain and then let it go. Forgive yourself for hurting yourself by holding onto the irritant and begin to coat that pearl to full perfection.

The world is your oyster, to me that means we have the opportunity to make a whole strand of pearls, taking the ugly irritant and turning it into something beautiful and priceless. Share your pearls, the wisdom in them, not the pain. Share the dignity and honor of it, that will make someone think and smile and see you for the wonderful pearl that you are. These priceless gems may just help someone not have to have an irritant that they would need to coat too.
