There are many things in life that can bring us down, make us upset, or ruin our day. Sometimes these things cloud our vision of all the great things that happen to us, and all the beauty that surrounds us. When we consider how much worse things can be, and not take what we have for granted, it can bring us happiness to express gratitude for where we are, and the opportunities we have to continue developing.
Here are some things for which I'm grateful:
My job and job security
For myself, I have a job which can get very difficult at times - the hours are frequently inhumane and without breaks, I'm constantly fighting against the restrictions imposed by those that hired me, and the stress of human lives hanging in my hands builds up over time. Sometimes I deal with attending physicians and coworkers who are... not nice people, to put it in mild terms. In my medicine-themed posts, you'll often see me mention significant problems that I face due to how the hospital is run.
However, there are times when this job is rewarding as very few other jobs can be. Those moments are irreplaceable and do stick around. In my work environment there's often no time to take in such moments, and I'll likely be able to look at them more fondly when this portion of my training is over in 2 1/2 years. Having mostly great coworkers and attending physicians makes the time I spend far more tolerable.
Additionally, my current employer, who directly saw my work ethic before I started my current job, is the only one who saw my potential and hired me - and she certainly have no regrets. My test scores were certainly not great, but my practical knowledge is strong, and my humane and empathetic approach with patients is nearly unparalleled. I say this despite constantly doubting and questioning my own abilities, a quality which I believe allows me to continue openly learning without having a superficial ego get in the way of improving. Staying humble is essential to improving oneself.
My home life
My family is supportive of my efforts to an extent which very few people are fortunate enough to have. Their emotional support, the ways in which they help with daily tasks, and the true home which they create permits me to become better at my job, rest more effectively, and even spend time blogging on Hive. 馃榿 ... And I readily admit that I don't have an easy personality, so their tolerance of my peculiarities takes quite some strength.
The world around me
There is so much beauty around us, both natural and man-made. Once in a while, when I run, I try to take in some of the creations made by humans that are absolute professionals in their fields - things that, with my current knowledge and capabilities, I could never do. I also appreciate the creations of nature; granted, there is not very much of this around me as I live in an inner city.
Conclusion
In day-to-day life, I often forget the blessings that I have, but once in a while I do remember them. It's something I should practice more often, even if for only a minute per day. The positive effects of gratitude will help me get through the difficult days in life, learn from the tough days, and even further appreciate the good days. Maybe it can help you as well.
