Hello, friends of the Reflexiónes community.
Today I’m sharing a reflective piece on spirituality these days, and how, for many of us, it can end up being quite draining. And yes, it sounds contradictory, but often the desire to be ‘enlightened’ can end up dimming our inner light more and more.
Why do I say this?
Nowadays, it’s become a trend on social media to talk about spirituality, where everyone is a guru, a coach, a therapist or even a psychologist, simply because they address universal issues such as suffering, heartbreak and financial difficulties, amongst other things – which gradually turns all of this into a marketing ploy.
We often need to listen to a podcast and hear stories that nourish us and make us reflect on where we are in our lives, but what happens when, in our desire to be spiritual, we end up wearing ourselves out?
We become so overwhelmed by rituals, meditation, fasting and books that it often numbs us.
I’m aware that all these practices help us and stimulate us, but they aren’t the ultimate goal of spirituality and personal growth.
I believe we need to start slowing down and pausing, to assess where we’re at.
Because I’m one of those who thinks that being spiritual goes beyond lighting candles and going on retreats in the mountains.
We need to be realistic when it comes to healing, and realise that courage and self-esteem are built through actions, not just by reading books.
Because getting up early, doing your rituals and meditating three times a day doesn’t make you a better person.
Ultimately, these are habits that don’t help.
But what does bring about real change within you is the courage you build from within after facing your fears, forgiving yourself and loving yourself – and thus realising that being spiritual is a personal and intimate journey that isn’t defined by a particular practice or religion, but is the result of the person you have become through your actions.
We must be mindful that we want to do our best to be the best version of ourselves every day, without pressure or comparisons, so as not to lose our way on the path to enlightenment.
