He stole the cash register!
Another quiet day. Lunchtime had already passed. You know, that time of day when everything feels heavy and your eyes start to droop without warning. Ryan arrives again; well, he always brightens things up with his peculiar jokes. Ryan greets everyone with his usual energy and warmth and proceeds to look for what he intends to buy. That day, too, the heaviness was overwhelming him, so he was going to eat some delicious chips while playing Call of Duty.
Milla, who was working as the receptionist at the time, took advantage of having someone she trusted in the store to restock the top shelf with more toilet paper. It ran out very quickly this week; the stomach crisis that swept the area because of Mr. José's burrito cart turned out to be good for the store after all. Nobody can resist those delicious burritos with his special sauce. Milla's father briefly approached the counter and alerted her that he was going to take the cash register, as the technician had arrived to repair it. He explained that he had left his tools in the workshop, so he would have to take it for a moment, and she needed to calculate the total with a calculator and write it down in her notebook. Mr. Milano was in a hurry and didn't realize that Milla hadn't heard him, as she was a little deaf from the water she'd gotten in her face during the swim before arriving at work.
Milla finished stocking the toilet paper and went back to her station, but she noticed something strange… “Mmm, the register!” she exclaimed in fright. She checked around the counter to see if it had fallen, but she didn't see it. She looked around and saw Ryan standing there, approaching the counter with the groceries she wanted to buy. She decided to laugh and exhaled, “How funny, Ryan! But you can't play around with the register, so please give it back.” But Ryan didn't understand. He just laughs, as if it's a joke someone's playing on him, but he doesn't understand it. This makes him look like the one responsible for a bad joke in Milla's eyes. She insists again that he return it. But he doesn't know what she's talking about. She gets angry and, in a more serious voice, tells him it's not funny, that he should hand over the box because her family will be upset. But he doesn't know what to say. Then she gets even angrier and calls her parents (not knowing her father is out) and siblings, asking them to intervene and force poor Ryan to return what he didn't have… Milla's siblings, her mother, and some neighbors arrive and insist that Ryan hand over the box, saying that people don't like those kinds of jokes; some even say they're fed up with his pranks. Tempers are rising; people are getting angry. But all Ryan can say is that he doesn't know where it is, he hadn't taken anything, and there was no joke. Some of the neighbors, clearly annoyed, started grabbing things with malicious intent against Ryan… About 30 minutes passed with this tension, and just as things were about to escalate, Mr. Milano arrived with the cash register. He saw the commotion but assumed they were just returning for more toilet paper. Upon entering, he told his youngest son to clear all the paper from the storeroom, certain it would all sell out that day. Everyone watched him walk past with the cash register in his arms and place it back as if nothing had happened. Then, he took Ryan's chips, opened them, and said, "Your chips are delicious, yum yum!"—a joke they'd been making for years. He left to say goodbye to the technician who had brought him, muttering aloud, "Thank God for Mr. José's burritos."
Everyone stared at Ryan, and with embarrassed expressions, they all apologized. Some neighbors even dared to blame him for their jokes. Ryan, smiling slightly but pale as milk, simply left as if he'd dodged a stampede. That day he decided to put the jokes on hold and preferred not to go near Milla and Mr. Milano's shop again, although they often stopped by his house inviting him back when they brought him groceries he used to buy, as an apology for the awkward moment they'd put him through.
