It was the day of the Tournament and the whole city - or so it seemed to Tier - was out on the streets. Excitement hung in the air like the green fog from the chemical plant.

"Will we be able to see?" Tier asked her father anxiously. "There are so many people! I want to be able to see!"

Her father didn't answer but squeezed her hand reassuringly and flashed her a quick smile.

Dad didn't like crowds. He didn't like people really. That he was taking her to see the Tournament showed Tier how much he loved her. She smiled back up at her father and squeezed his hand back.

They walked with the crowd, a river of people going in the same direction. Tier wasn't frightened, even if she couldn't see where she was going, and she couldn't have stopped walking if she had wanted to. She was at the will of the large crowd.
