At first James thought The Insider was a symptom of some kind of mental illness. Kay, one of James' cousins, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia two years ago, and although it was only whispered about he was worried that the things he was experiencing were very similar.
"She hears voices, you know," James had over heard his mother say to his father. "And she thinks someone is controlling her thoughts."
That was about three months before The Insider made itself known to James.
James had been taking a shit at the time.
"Hello James," the voice said, loud and clear in his head. He looked around the small room but there was no one there. And besides, James knew the voice came from within his head.
From Inside his mind.
"Aren't you going to say hello back," the voice said. "I thought you had been brought up better than that."
