"Congratulations," he said, in a decidedly unenthusiastic tone. He attempted a weak smile which just made things worse.

"You could try to be happy for me," Matilda said.

He shrugged.

"If you were in my position would you be able to offer the same?"

Matilda paused and thought about it.

"Probably not," she said. "But I was always a worse looser than you."

He smiled, and this time it was genuine.

"Well this time, I am the biggest loser."

Matilda laughed. He was. He really was.

"Well," she said. "I guess I'll see you around."

She left Ian standing in the lobby, she could feel the heat of his glare on her back as she reached the doors, but she didn't turn around. She stepped out into the cool of the night and never looked back.

It was only years later after she heard what had happened to Ian that she regretted her action.
