His name was Russel Sprites, but everyone called him Brussel Sprouts. He didn't seem to mind. In fact, when I was first introduced to him, it was he who said, "call me Brussel, everyone else does."
I thought it was kind of a silly nickname, the kind of name you might have when you were a kid in short trousers running around a playground. Not the kind of name a politician running for President should have.
But others disagreed.
"Brussel Sprouts are good for you," Marge - Russel's campaign manager told me once. "Not everyone likes them, but they don't disagree that they are good for you." I shook my head.
"Some people hate them, Marge," I said. "My sister in law calls them 'nazi cabbages". Do you think a presidential canditate should be associated with nazi cabbages? Because I don't."
Marge laughed.
"Look," she said. "Let everyone focus on the name. Because then they won't be looking too closely at the things we don't want them to find."
