Hello, everyone! Many of you probably already know why I’ve been MIA these past few days—my country is going through a very difficult time, and I just couldn’t bring myself to think about anything other than Venezuela. It’s also been impossible for me to put into words what I’m still feeling, but they say it’s good to get things off your chest, so I want to give it a try.

First, I want to let you know that my family is doing well, and thank you to everyone who took the time to ask about them—I truly appreciate it so much. Even so, this hurts me so much because I am a mother, a daughter, and a sister, and because seeing Venezuela suffer once again breaks my heart.

Also because it’s no secret that Venezuela wasn’t prepared to deal with disasters of this nature—we have hospitals without supplies, government agencies without resources, and don’t even get me started on the prevention and early warning agencies… and as if that weren’t enough, recent news reports allege that they’re blocking humanitarian aid from entering Venezuela—yes, just when we need it most.

But beyond the controversies that arise in situations like these, what I want to emphasize is that being outside the country doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, or that just because we know our family and friends are safe, we can simply wash our hands of the matter. I dare say that the pain is just as great as that of those who are still in the country, because of the helplessness of being unable to help in any way other than with money or prayers; in many cases, we would like to be among those support groups that work day in and day out to rescue survivors or offer words of encouragement to families who have lost everything. It hurts to see the number of dead and missing (and the numbers are rising); it hurts for the parents who lost their children and also for the mothers who died saving them; it hurts for those who lost their homes after it likely took them so many years—or their entire lives—to build them; it all hurts.

This tragedy has caused us immense emotional pain, and it is not over yet, as there are mothers who still hold out hope of finding their children, and children waiting for their parents. Even though the rule of thumb says that the human body can only survive 4 days without water and 4 weeks without food, only God has the final say, and I will continue to pray for you, and I know that many others will do the same.

This, too, has caused even greater economic damage than Venezuela was already facing, but once again we will pull through, just as we always have, so to all Venezuelans who are there, I send you a big hug and lots of strength, and I hope you are safe and well. May this tragedy continue to bring out the best and most compassionate in all of us, because I know it will. Thank you also to everyone who has joined in the rescue, aid, and protection efforts—I admire you all so much—and to those who are still trying to get there despite the difficulties, my thoughts are with all of you.
