Have you ever imagined how it feels to be rich and never want to be poor again?
Chief McCarthy was the richest man in the village.
He owned the largest farm, the biggest house, and more cattle than anyone could count. Whenever he walked through the market, people stepped aside in respect.
Yet every night, he slept with all the lamps in his house burning.
The servants whispered about it.
"He must be afraid of thieves," one said.
"No," replied another. "With all his guards, no thief would dare enter."
The mystery remained unsolved.
One evening, a young traveler arrived in the village. Hearing the rumors, he became curious.
When he met the chief, he asked, "Why do you keep every lamp lit at night?"
The chief laughed and changed the subject.
But the traveler did not give up.
Days later, he found an old servant who had worked for the chief since childhood.
"The chief fears darkness," the servant revealed.
The traveler was shocked.
"Darkness? How can the richest man in the village fear something so ordinary?"
The old servant sighed.
"Because darkness reminds him of who he used to be."
That night, the traveler finally learned the truth.
Many years earlier, before he became rich, McCarthy had been a poor boy. His family often went to bed hungry. Their small hut had no lamps, no candles, and no hope.
Every night, he would sit in the darkness and listen to his younger siblings cry from hunger.
When fortune finally smiled on him, he became determined never to return to that life.
Years later, he had escaped poverty—but not the fear it left behind.
The lamps were never meant to chase away darkness.
They were meant to chase away memories.
The traveler realized something important.
People often think success removes fear.
But sometimes, success simply hides it.
For the rest of his life, Chief McCarthy remained wealthy.
Yet the one thing he could never truly escape was the shadow of his past.
Do you think our greatest fears come from what might happen in the future, or from what happened to us in the past?
