The girl and the boy sat on grass with a picnic spread out between them.
“Tell me about yourself,” he said, and she flinched.
“There isn't much to say.”
She looked away, hoping he would leave it at that.
“No, tell me, I want to get to know you.”
She shook her head in silence as tears gathered in the corners of her eyes.
“Please?”
Her heart swelled for a moment, but again she shook her head.
“I don’t like to talk about myself.”
He took a bite of his sandwich, squinting his eyes at her as he swallowed.
“Do you steal donkeys and cut off their tails for fun?”
She kept her lips closed but a laugh came from behind them.
“No. Definitely not.”
“Then what?” He leaned forward and guessed again, then again, and as he got closer she nodded.
He stopped talking, and she spoke.
Tears spilled forth with her words as she said all of the things that she thought she never would.
“Now I'm crying,” she said when she finished. “I can't even talk without crying.”
The boy reached out and brushed his fingers against her cheek.
“Is that all it was? You’re fine. The tears are just floss to remove the debris.”
