How much quality folk music I listened to in the last 10 days is a miracle.
I didn't go out to bars and restaurants, where I would usually listen to it most often, but I did it through the YouTube browser.
The reason?
It's simple.
When I found a post in the #YouHive community by our dear @avdesing with the topic for the month of October:
"To pay tribute, as I've done today, to an artist, a favorite singer of a family member, such as a mum or dad."
I was immediately reminded of a singer of Serbian folk music, whom my late father loved to listen to.
In order for you to understand the time I'm writing about (and to know which period of the 20th century this music is from), I'll say just one thing. My father also listened to the music performed by Predrag Živković Tozovac on single records, and a little later, when I joined the audience, on audio cassettes and cassette recorders.
Tozovac, one of the most famous singers of folk music, composed, played and sang for over 50 years.
When I asked Gemini to give me the titles of all his songs in one table, the answer was that it was not feasible and that it could be done by age...
Over 400 tracks, really a lot for one tablet🙂
So in order, from 1965, when Tozovac first performed, until 2021, when he died.
The only "challenge" for writing this post is that I found a small number of videos with Tozovac's music on YouTube...
He appeared on the TV program as early as 1967 in the New Year's Eve program.
Source is Youtube, for all videos and music in this post.
And he made a video in that period with a mix of several tracks.
And from the videos on, I didn't find anything.
The recordings from the performances that I found are mostly of poor quality, so I will share only the music with you.
There is a recording of a concert in which he sings with some other legends of folk music at these venues:
Since I also became a fan of the tracks performed by Tozovac, when I started visiting bars and ordering music in them (in addition to food and drinks), I will now divide the tracks into two parts.
One, which contains my favorite songs, but also the other (along with this first one), which were my father's favorites.
Na kraj sela čađava mehana
Siromah sam al volim da živim
Sta je zivot kad se mreti mora
And a little more recent, which we often listened to together:
Ovamo, cigani
My father also loved and other performers. Usnija Redžepova was his favorite of the singers of folk music.
While looking for one of her music videos, I came across a review by a foreigner, who had no idea of the words of this song, but felt the emotion and strength of the song.
Usnija Redžepova
Živote moj
In addition to his review, I also shared the entire track and the lyrics of the song, when you understand it, it's there to evoke emotion for those who don't understand the language they're talking about...
Živote moj
Samo pesma zna,
U samoći koliko su nesrećni dani.
Samo pesma zna,
Kako boli kad duša se neverom rani.
Živote moj,
Gorak li si bio.
Čemeru moj
Ja ti otvori vrata od srca a ti
Ljubav i dušu mi ispi.
My Life
Only a song knows,
In solitude, how unhappy the days are.
Only a song knows,
How it hurts when the soul is wounded by betrayal.
My life,
How bitter you have been.
My bitter sorrow,
I opened the doors of my heart to you, and you—
Drank away my love and my soul.
Was it not enough for you,
That I burn in the fire of love for you.
Was it not enough for you,
That I love you, care for you, and tend to you through the nights?
My life,
How bitter you have been.
My bitter sorrow,
You drank away my soul.
My life,
How bitter you have been.
My bitter sorrow,
You drank away my soul.
Only a song knows,
That I hid all secrets in my soul and heart.
Only a song knows,
How to return me to the days when I was happy.
My life,
How bitter you have been.
My bitter sorrow,
You drank away my soul.
My life,
How bitter you have been.
My bitter sorrow,
You drank away my soul.
Napravio sam ovaj post za sve Hivere sa ovih prostora, koji su ikada čuli ove numere...
But also for my friends, who have no idea what is being sung in these songs, but who can enjoy the great melodies.
