So, today's breakfast menu served me jollof rice and fish. Here I was munching this rice, basking and savouring it's sweetness. At the same time, I was thinking, "Mehhn, I no just sabi wetin I go write today oh for this Hive." Writer's block finally found it's way through my cranium, pursuing out every single post idea in me. I hit a dead end. But, the gates of writer's block did not prevail against the sensation I got from my meal of which I so much relished. In an instant, boom! I got this question; 馃憞
HOW MANY NIGERIANS DO YOU KNOW THAT HATE RICE?
I literally haven't seen a single Nigerian, in my entire life that hates rice. Why do you think it's like this? Is it some sort of genetic code in every Nigerian's DNA that we all must love rice, or at least, we all must not hate rice? Check it na. I actually know some people that hate garri and soup. I mean, garri and soup that's like another baba in this country. If rice were to be lion the king of the jungle, then garri and soup would have been elephant, his second in command.
Hold on, that's not right. I think if rice were to have a gender, it would actually be a she. What do you think? My point is, you still see people that'll tell you that they don't like garri and soup or even worse, that they HATE beans (how could they! 馃槕). But rice is still a superstar among other meals. All other foods are gushing over her. She's just perfect, whether she's jollof, fried, white, coconut-ed 馃槄, and so on and so forth. Psst, don't tell anyone I told you 馃か. Stew actually prefers rice when she's on white.
Whether local or foreign, rice is rice to everyone. If I'm to make a vague guess through my observations, I'd say that rice, in it's different variants is number one on the list of foods most loved by Nigerians. Or am I lying? Can you remember those days in primary school where they will ask about your favorite food and you will say fried rice and chicken, or abi it's just me 馃槒? Expose yourselves now in the comments, would ya 馃檪?
99.9999% of Nigerians love rice. It's even an occasions' special, or should I say, the occasions' special. Christmas rice, burial rice, birthday rice, party rice, wedding rice are just some of rice's codenames. Rice can never be caught unfresh.
