As we are being pushed and rushed through this fast pace world, the art of observation is disappearing. Every day we are bombarded with so much stimuli that holding a thought for few seconds is becoming increasingly difficult. We are being exposed simultaneously to technology, social media, social activity, financial pressure and of course traffic! At the same time we’re being expected to function normally and decode it all! No wonder we are so stressed out!
The problem this creates is that in the physical dimension events unfold at a different pace than our thought process which is spinning in our heads at the speed of light. The desire for instant gratification is creating a society that won’t be able to foresee anything past few minutes ahead let alone observe and comprehend a complete phenomenon unfolding in nature or society, this will leave us vulnerable since science relies on observation that takes unpredictable amounts of time.
When we rely on fast forward speed perception, reality becomes like a movie that needs to be resolved quickly preferably with a happy ending and while this is a practical and addicting approach, fast perception takes us away from actually understanding how reality works. We are becoming lazy, unable to focus, we are neglecting observation because we don’t know how to stop the noises in our head and we are losing our natural ability to objectively and quietly observe the world around us. As our thoughts are distracted, jumping back and forth from flashing bits of the data, the way we’re socializing with each other is also changing, we are no longer talking, we are texting, we are selling our distorted better selves in social media and hiding the ugliness from each other, the world is becoming a giant media screen, where we all are turning into fake good looking liars!
We are constantly relating from mind to mind, never dealing with the mediocrity that makes us human, when we communicate, we project our agenda onto others, we complain about other people when is ourselves that we need to work on, we are polarized, if we are naïve we think everybody is nice and if we are deceitful, we think everyone is evil. To understand human nature we have to do the work, we need to be silence and observe without judgement and compassion. Reality has a lot of layers and to understand it, our attention needs to be completely engaged, otherwise the resulting data will be fragmented and subjective. Intellect alone is limited so are emotions, one aspect of our human abilities is not enough, we have to find new ways to deal with life’s problems. We need to be able to totally immerse ourselves in silence and from there find brand new ways to view the world around us, our future depends on it.
