Hello hivers!
Here's my entry to the freewrite organized by @mariannewest, details here and also day 4 of my writing challenge. Prompts are in bold italics.
I crouched in starting position, hands poised on the track and back coiled like a spring. "On your mark! Get set!" The starting gun boomed. I launched myself forward, trying to spring ahead of the pack. I couldn't lose the race, not after all the yapping I had done back at gym class. I sprinted as fast as my legs could go and was well ahead of the rest. I could hear the crowd chanting my name "Charlie...Charlie…. Charlie!!!" and the cheerleaders screaming in ecstasy. Here I was, unrivaled since the 7th grade, about to finish in record time again. Suddenly, the sky turned dark and it began to rain. Little did I realize what was going on until I heard screams from the crowd. I stopped and turned around and everyone was drenched in a red like substance scampering for safety. I tilted my head downwards and stared at my shirt, it was soaked in blood. I glanced back up and everyone else was gone. "Charlie", I heard someone whisper, I turned around. It called again in a loud screeching voice, I covered my ears and fell to the ground.
I came back to reality. It was all a dream, I was sweating profusely, and the lights were out. It felt strange as I had to replace the fuse last night, "so what could have been the problem" I thought to myself. It was raining heavily outside, and I was losing sleep time. I felt around for my phone, turned on the flashlight, and proceeded to the basement. Charlie"...I heard in a soft tone, almost as if someone whispered my name. I turned around abruptly, "Hello! Who's there" I cried out but no reply. I thought I heard someone call my name, perhaps it was just the wind, or I was hearing things. Either way, I was tired and needed to get back to bed.
A bolt of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating the room for a second and a peal of thunder followed. I opened the basement door, walked down the stairs, and finally found my way to the main box. I examined it and was surprised to see a blown fuse. I cussed under my breath and searched around for the spare fuse. I knew it was around somewhere, but I couldn't quite make out the exact place I left it. Suddenly, the door slammed shut, startled my phone slipped through my fingers and crashed to the floor. The staircase creaked, fear-stricken, I kept staring at the stair-well, but I couldn't make anything out of the dark. I reached out for the nearest item I could use for any form of defense. It happened to be an old chalice. I held it firmly then bent down to pick my phone.
I turned on the device and faced it towards the stair-well. No one was there. I heaved a sigh of relief, "I guess I live with spirits now" I said trying to make a joke but I ended up giving myself the chills. I sighed again, rubbed at my eyes, and closed them for a second. "Charlie" I heard again, in a rather coarse tone this time. I opened my eyes and there it was, staring back at me .......
