It was a chilly saturday morning. Julie could hear the village gong sounding from afar. She knew instantly that all adult males and women of the community are required to gather at the village square for something urgent. That's the unique way the community summon everyone when something strange or urgent had happened in the community.
What could be the problem, she wondered. The gong kept sounding repeatedly but this time the sound was much closer.
She hurriedly dressed up in preparation to answer the call. In a matter of minutes the village square was filled up with men and women each whispering in low tone as to what must have called for that sudden summon that chilly morning.
Then the village head entered and greeted everyone in a high pitch voice. Then he became crestfallen.
"My God people", he began slowly. "May I apologize for bringing you out this cold morning".
"You know that it is unusual for this type of gathering but whenever situations call for it we won't relent to summon you and here we are today...."
As he was about to say more a group of young boys pushed in a middle-aged man into the centre circle of the village square. He was guessing at everyone as if he was looking out for his relatives or friends with no sign of guilt on him.
"Well, ladies and gentlemen, you can see what we have here this morning. This man's name is Max".
At that point there was heightened expectations from the crowd. Ears were already itching everyone to hear what crime he had committed. It must be grievous for the village youth to have arrested him and summoned everyone that early morning.
"This young man went into the farm of late Jude wife and almost harvested the entire yam she planted. He wants the poor widow to go hungry....."
At that point there was massive uproar by the crowd.
"Thief, thief, ..." They kept yelling at the man.
At that point the village head raised his arms for them to stop. It took a while before everywhere became clam again.
He then continued, "Max didn't know that the late wife of Jude the owner of the farm was coming. So when she saw him she raised an alarm. The young man wanted to strange her but it was quite unfortunate for him..."
Another uproar erupted in the crowd.
"Thief, "thief....
"Please let's remain quite let me finish", the village head requested. When the crowd quietened he then continued.
"Our gallant youths who were keeping vigil were alerted by the shouts of late Jude wife and they went to the farmland and saw Max visibly struggling with the lady. They disarmed him and brought him to me. That's why I summoned you all here this early morning so that you can see what we have seen this morning.
There was serious uproar this time with no one to control the crowd. Everyone was raining curses and abuse on the man - Max with no guilt seen on his face.
This is my entry for today's @daily.prompt: No guilt
