Happy October, my friends and fellow creativs. I somehow waited for October which means art prompt season is officially here, and I will try to participate in the Charactober character design challenge whenever I have an inspiration for today’s prompt the Acorn Gatherer I wanted to create a cozy, cute character that brings out all those warm autumn feels.

When I read the prompt, I immediately pictured an active little forest creature high up in the oak branches getting ready for the autumn season ahead. Here is a look at my design choices for this piece:

  • The Expressive Character: I gave our little gatherer a large, curious dark eyes and a playful smile to give him an adventurous, friendly personality as he balances high up on a thick tree branch.
  • Smart & Functional Gear: You can’t gather acorns without the proper gear as mentioned in the design briefing so I equipped him with a sturdy satchel over his shoulder, a cozy orange long-sleeve top with a tiny collar detail, and neat electric blue pants.
  • Capturing the Harvest Moment: He is holding one freshly picked acorn close while preparing to snip another right off the branch with his little improvised hook.
  • Autumn Breeze Details: I added falling oak leaves swirling through the crisp blue sky to give the scene a sense of motion and cozy autumn atmosphere.

I kept my signature clean, bold black linework paired with a warm, flat color palette with rich browns, bright oranges, and a bright sky blue to make the character noticeable against background.

Are you participating in Charactober or Inktober this year, or are you lurking like me waiting for the right inspiration? Just look at all the awesome community art here on Draw a Day who knows you might be inspired to create autumn art.
