I am delighted to share this particular news with everyone and it's good. It's quite unfortunate that I haven't been able to go to school for 6 months now due to the strike in federal tertiary institutions in my country. I felt so sad about the situation but I can say I'm proud of myself because I have utilized this break properly. I learnt a new skill and this is something I have always wanted to do.
I have always wanted to learn how to bake but I never had the equipments or the money to pay in order to acquire the skill. I have two friends who can bake but each time I ask to watch them whenever they're baking, but they'll always ask me to pay because they didn't learn free of charge. I understood with them and decided I'll begin catering classes once I can afford to.
Last month, a neighbour informed me of a foundation that allows people to come in and apply to learn few skills without paying for a period of time. I was excited to know that catering was one of the skills listed there so I quickly went and applied. A month and few weeks later, I was notified that I have been accepted and I should resume the next week and I did.
That's how my catering journey began. My class had 15 students with 12 active ones and I was the class representative. We were taught how to bake the vanilla, chocolate and red velvet cake. We were taught how to ice our cakes using the butter icing method and the fondant method. We were taught how to make doughnuts, meatpie, spring rolls, samosa and chin chin.
We were often shared into groups and given some practicals to do. At the end of every session, we always compared our productions and see which group did better. We sold our productions to other department too and they'll give us feedback so we get to know if we're doing well or not but trust me, the feedback was always good.
The only thing I don't like about baking is the process of mixing ingredients like butter and granulated sugar manually. I remember I had a serious pain on my shoulders for days. There and then I promised I would buy a mixer just so I don't lose my arms😂
This is me🙂
Even though the period of learning wasn't so long and I know I still have a lot to learn, I am still very grateful for the opportunity because now I know the basics of baking and I can bake the three kinds of cakes we were taught perfectly. It was really nice to meet and connect with other people as well.
I'm looking forward to practicing all that I learnt on my own and I hope I'll be able to learn to do just more than the basics as time goes on. In all, I'm really delighted to know how to bake and make a few pastries. I am super proud of myself.
