I have been scaring most of my friends for a good few years now by stating that I would like to live to 100 "Yeah, I want folk to cry: Will he never die!" this spawned a whole new conversation with my mate Tig about, for want of a better word, immortality, although the thread of the conversation was more about "Who would be the real Pete?" Let me explain. The concept was that somehow my brain patterns, the very essence that was me, could somehow be copied into a machine. The philosophical question is: "Which one is Pete?" Meatbag Pete, the one that has a human body, or Robot Pete? Most people would probably say that the true Pete is Meatbag Pete and that Robot Pete while saying the types of things Meatbag Pete would say, wasn't actually Pete in their eyes.
Tig then introduced me to The Bobiverse, a series of books by Dennis E. Taylor I don't normally like Sci-Fi books, but these had totally captured the concept I was thinking of. The main character, "Bob," is killed in a car accident, and they transfer his brain patterns to a VM (Virtual Machine). I won't spoil the books for anyone, but basically, Bob, with the aid of backups, becomes immortal and goes off in a spaceship to have adventures across the universe.
So would I like to live for 1000 years if my body never aged? I think I'd probably say no, for the simple reason that if I've managed to survive for that long, why should it come to an end? I would like to live to be 100, though, mainly, I'd like to live long enough to see someone walk on Mars.
My actual name is Pete. Here is why I have the username dickturpin.
