Hello, friends especially foodies!
Last Saturday, mom and I back to the oldest shopping center building in my city. This shopping center already renewed and renovated, here how the outlook of the shopping center looked.
It is pretty and had some green plants. We needed to arrive there before 9 am.
Well maybe you asked me why we went there early morning?
We went there because we wanted to try the viral Indonesian traditional cake store, where we couldn’t enter last time we went there. The store itself is popular but it came from the capital city of West Java, Bandung. And beside going to this store, we also wanted to try any Indonesian food there, because the shopping center had some popular restaurants or cafes from other Indonesian cities which only had the branch there. So when you come to this place, you would be able to taste the varieties of our dishes! Isn’t that interesting?
SARI-SARI cake store
When we arrived there 5 minutes to 9 am, there were already customers there before us. Imagine, how popular was this cake store. The name of the store is SARI-SARI. Their main branch is located in Bandung, East Java. They only have two branches so far, first in Bandung, and this one, first in other city, is in Sarinah, Central Jakarta. The store already sold Indonesian traditional cakes since 1967, where they started with a stall on the street.
When you came to this stall, you needed to pick the cakes or any food you want first then put them on a tray that they provide. And it was our time to to pick, they had soo or too many kind of Indonesian traditional cakes there, that made us confused to choose some. But it would be too late if we just saw at those cakes, right? So we started to choose..
WHAT THEY HAD INSIDE?
The round soft cake in green and yellow you saw there were nona manis cake, next to it, putri noong, kau mau, coconut putu mayang, sticky rice angku, sweet potato talam, the pink color cake I didn’t know the name, serundeng sticky rice, and getuk lindri.
Next they also had
mungbean ku cake which looked like pink mini pao, the green ones called lumpang while the one on the left was mini fruits that made mainly from sugar. On one side of the store they also had some kind of Indonesian rice like aromatic ginger egg fried rice, oncom tutug rice, uduk rice, crispy chicken rice, smashed chicken rice, krawu rice, Lombok rice, and some other kind of rices. Then they also sold sandwich, kind of pempek, salted egg, spaghetti schotel, otak-otak (fishcake) and choipan. They also still had other in banana leaves traditional cakes like lemper, arem-arem, and also fried snacks like risoles, pastel and others. They sold banana springrolls, milk pie, jackfruit talam, marmer cake in slice, mochi, putu, and the green ones mom took called serabi.
They had roasted pepe cake, Bangka bolu kojo, wingko babat, pepe sagu suji, red pepe sagu, serabi oncom, gethuk bandung, fruit pie, clurut, cucur, bowl cake, solo serabi, wajit ketan, premium legit layer cake, and cheese pie.
Beside so many kind of cakes I mentioned actually they still had some other cakes which were unknown ( I even didn’t know their names),
also they sold kind of Indonesian rujak there, and some other Indonesian desserts such as mung bean, black sticky rice, biji salak and others. They also had Indonesian crispy chips like cassava in balado paste, and others. Still they had banana cheese, ongol-ongol, bread and again, some other varieties of cakes.
I saw an interesting dish called lontong oncom then took one of it with the oncom spicy chilli paste that served separately. After we finished in taking picking what we wanted, we then needed to go to their serving table outside, the long desk where they would help us to pack the cakes we bought in boxes. Mom also bought some for the neighbor so we asked them to put it separately. We needed to wait for the customers before us.
Then it was our turn, so a staff helped us with the packing.
ARE THEY PRICEY?
After that we right away to the cashier to pay. For 36 pcs of cake we paid 114,500 IDR or just around 7.7 USD. I think their price was cheap compared to other places and they also the one stop place to find Indonesian traditional cakes, which is rare nowadays.
HISTORY
At one side of the store you could see the history of this store. Started from a street stall on 1967 then they have growth until nowadays, they could had 3 branches so far, inspired! You could even see the pictures of them..
On the other part they proudly put our country red white flag.
And here how to cakes for both of us at home. Oh no, we had too many cakes, for two of us!
HOW DO THEY TASTE?
And I would like to share about how most of our takeaway cakes tasted.
Started from gethuk which had yellow and soft brown color, it made from cassava and served with coconut. It had sweet and savory flavour with soft texture. Next to it, it was lumpang which had green color with coconut also on the top. It tasted so good in sweet and savory. Mom loved it much.
Next we also got solo serabi, it had a taste of sweet mixed with savory and it had coconut milk as one of its’ main ingredient. It cooked with fried in small pan, as you could see it from the result, the texture was soft and a bit crispy on its’ back/bottom. We also got talam, one of mom favourite which had sweet savory flavour, it was tasty even not the best one mom ever tasted.
In the banana leaves we had jackfruit lupis which had brown color cause it made with brown sugar. It had soft sticky texture with sweet flavour, it had small jackfruit bites too there! I also still had nagasari or popular as banana cake.
It had banana inside with the flour steamed as the outer part. It was soft and smooth in sweet a bit savory flavour.
The unique I said before oncom chilli paste rice cake. In order to eat this we must open the banana leaves to get the rice cake then put the chilli on it.
It had sweet spicy flavour and so tasty, no wonder it made from oncom (fermented soy) plus many other authentic west Javanese spices, so in love with it, and you couldn’t find it in any other places.
For their layer pepe cakes, I tried their two varieties, both tasted great in sweet savory flavour, chewy soft texture. The different was only the smell of suji leaves on the green ones. Hmmh so tasty!
We also get two kind of layer cakes that day the one on the top had too much sweet condensed milk that made it so sweet. While the one below had better flavour, medium sweetness, prune on top and non greasy texture, it was also soft. And it also had lower price than any stores could ever sold!
We couldn’t finish all in a day so I finished that day with cantik manis, my favorite cake which they named cendol hunkue. It had soft texture with sweet savory flavour, so tasty like the cake usually. For the fruit pie, I took it in the Sunday morning, it was still okay. It had some fruits like kiwi, orange and grape on top, vanilla paste below and the pie, pie was quite soft. It tasted sweet and also fresh.
Bowl cakes tasted sweet and soft, but it would be better to have it at the same day we bought it. And the pao, it was a bit hard but still tasty with mung bean filling. It had sweet flavour.
Unfortunately we missed the serabi kinca with brown sugar coconut sauce because it was fermented because we didn’t right away consume it.
Conclusion
A precious lesson for us, not buying too many cakes next time! The cakes there were all tasty and they also had less price then other places. So you would be happy to go to this place where you could find thousand of Indonesian tasty cakes with affordable prices……
