Hello, friends!

A Little Story Before the Drawing

I got my iPad Air M3 at the end of last year to improve my drawing (before I had used my Samsung s6 lite for several years), and one of the things I wanted to try was digital drawing using Procreate. A new gadget and new apps - quite a challenge for me!
But somehow, I never really got around to exploring it. I had my wedding to prepare for, and later, I also had to deal with morning sickness. With everything going on, I didn't really have the chance to sit down and start learning something new.
So, my iPad kept waiting for me. Wkwkwk. 😆
Now that I finally have the chance to explore Procreate, I decided to start with something cute and fun. Since Halloween is approaching, I thought, why not draw Grizz wearing a pumpkin costume?
And that's how my first digital drawing came to life!
I'm still a beginner, so I won't be sharing any complicated techniques here. Instead, I want to show you how I made this drawing in just three simple steps. Maybe this will inspire other beginners who have been wanting to try digital drawing, too.
Let’s see how I made it in three simple steps!

Step 1: Sketch Grizz on Layer 1 ✏️

First, I started with a simple sketch of Grizz. I drew his head, ears, facial features, body, arms, and legs, then designed his pumpkin costume around him.

I also added the pumpkin stem and leaves on top of his head, along with the jack-o'-lantern face on the costume.

I didn't worry too much about the colors at this stage. I just wanted to get the basic shapes right before moving on to the next step.

For beginners, my suggestion is to start with simple shapes and build your drawing little by little. You don't have to make everything perfect on your first try.

Step 2: Add the Colors on Layer 2 🎨

Once I was happy with the sketch, it was time to add some colors!

I used brown for Grizz's fur, orange for his pumpkin costume, green for the leaves, and dark colors for the eyes, nose, and jack-o'-lantern face. It was easy! I just had to drop the colors into the areas that I wanted to fill.
Seeing the colors appear made the drawing feel much more alive. I especially love the combination of orange, brown, and green because it gives Grizz that familiar Halloween look.
I worked on the colors separately from my sketch. Using layers helped me organize the drawing and made the process easier to manage.
You can choose your own color palette, too. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as mine. The fun part of digital drawing is experimenting until you find something you like!

Step 3: Add the Final Details on Layer 3 ✨

alt

The last step was adding the details and refining the outlines. To make it easier, I decreased the opacity of Layer 2, then I added the curved lines on the pumpkin to make it look more like a real pumpkin costume. I also refined the leaves, facial features, and other outlines to make everything look clearer.
These little details might seem simple, but they made a big difference to the finished drawing. If you notice, I didn’t use pure black. For some areas, I preferred the bolder colors. And for other areas, I used charcoal instead of pure black.

And finally, this is it! My Pumpkin Halloween Grizz was ready! 🎃🐻

My First Digital Drawing Experience 💕

Honestly, I'm happy that I finally started exploring Procreate instead of letting my iPad sit there unused for so long. There is still so much for me to learn, but at least I've taken the first step.

I know this drawing isn't perfect, but that's okay. It was my first attempt, and I enjoyed the process of bringing this cute little bear to life on my iPad.

I hope this simple tutorial can encourage other beginners to try digital drawing, too. You don't have to know every tool or technique before you begin. Sometimes, all you need is a simple idea and the willingness to give it a try.

Now I'm curious about what I should draw next!

Have you ever tried digital drawing? If you use Procreate, I'd love to hear any beginner-friendly tips you might have for me.

Anyway, if you fell in love with the grizz already, you could also support me by buying merchandise featuring grizz!
