Does it sometimes feel like you spend your entire life doing chores that never end? I suppose it's the stuff we sometimes call "busy work."
You wake up, make a list for the day, check things off, fix things that are broken or not operating the way they are suppose to; keep everything in place and by the end of the day it feels like you worked non-stop but what exactly do you have to show for it?
When you look closer it seems almost impossible to discern what actually moved forward.
And if you start paying attention, you realize that the room gets messy again, the inbox you just emptied fills up again, the same set of fires you just put out show up in slightly different shapes.
You resign yourself to going back and handling them, slipping into a more or less mindless pattern you approach like it represents your life purpose. But it feels empty... and you start feeling numb.
No one tells you this is an endless loop because from the outside it looks like you're being A Responsible Adult™ and it even looks like discipline and you persuade yourself that you're being productive.
Yet, deep down there's this growing feeling like you're always running but not getting anywhere... you're not really building anything that lasts, you're maintaining a reality that resets every night; every week; every year.
Most end up getting stuck on this track because it doesn't really hurt and it doesn't feel wrong enough to warrant stopping it.
And yet?
It slowly steals your time, piece by piece, as days turn into weeks; weeks turn into years... and your life becomes a series of things you "had to do," not things you chose to do.
Most people end up persuading themselves that "this is just how life works," because everyone else is doing pretty much the same thing.
Remarkably few people wake up to recognize that just because society claims that "it's just how things are" doesn't make it right and there's a difference between taking care of the stuff of life and actually losing your life inside the very process taking care of everything else.
Ultimately, the real question becomes — after all the cleaning, fixing, managing, repairing — what part of your life is actually growing?
Ask yourself what deserves to stay and become yours? What is your mark you will have left on this world?
If everything you do disappears by tomorrow, then where will you be and what parts of all of this will still have meaning?
In the final reckoning,we don't need to escape responsibility, but we do need to be minful of that turning point when it starts replacing your life because if you're not careful you'll end up spending years being busy, reliable, dedicated, adult and efficient... and still feel like you never truly lived.
You owe it to no-one to sleepwalk through life, in service of being seen as a "responsible adult."
Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful weekend!
