Sometimes I Can't Help but Wonder Where "It" Will All End...
Another month comes to a close... it's still April 30th for a couple more hours, here in our part of the world.
I feel slightly sad at saying that this was yet another month I am simply glad is over.
April brought taxes, more taxes and uncommon cold to our little world. At least it got a little warmer towards the end, and that was cheery, for both Mrs. Denmarkguy and myself. At least we were able to get our garden started, while the calendar was still on April.
The title of this post was "inspired" by thinking about how often these days we find ourselves looking at events/incidents and realizing that it went WORSE than expected.
In what feels like a normal state — at least to me — there's pretty much a balance between "worse than" and "better than," which keeps us on an even keel. Makes sense, right?
But when the "worse" column repeatedly seems to outweigh the "better" column, we end up with a bit of a problem. A repeated number of downsides gradually swamps our abilities to keep up with everything.
Which isn't to say that April didn't have a few bright moments... like discovering that you can actually use Food Stamp benefits to buy seeds to sow in your garden. I call it a "bright moment," but who the frak wants to be on food stamps?
I suppose the hardest thing in all this is finding the inspiration and energy to get up and persevere at the end of each setback. Sometimes I'm not surprised that as many people end up homeless in this country as we see... even our relatively small city of 10,000 has its own "tent city," now.
Of course, that's not going to be us! I've been homeless at an early point of my life, and I have no intention of going back.
But I still wonder how things are going to turn out for the many people around the US and beyond who find themselves struggling more and more as time passes. A recent survey found that 70% of Americans are now "financially stressed," and 58% are living paycheck-to-paycheck.
That's not a very pretty statistic, here in what is allegedly the wealthiest nation on the planet.
I don't doubt that the wealth exists, the question is that of where it is. I always find myself questioning the semantics when "reports" tell us that the economy is doing well... but it's a misnomer, because that "well" typically is measured by the fact that corporate profits are up, and possibly at record levels.
But that doesn't typically help the average person on the street because those "record profits" tend to be of more importance in terms of impressing stockholders than sharing them with employees as compensation.
Once again, I find myself wondering where it's all going to end.
Meanwhile, I'm grateful that $25 worth of vegetable seeds will likely end up having a "value" of $500 or more in fresh greens... that we will not have to spend actual money to buy! Most of them were "heirloom" seeds, too... meaning that we will be able to harvest our own seeds to use in future years... "the gift that keeps on giving!"
That would actually be better than expected!
