I improvised twice yesterday after coming in from a gorgeous evening at San Francisco's Embarcadero; my first one was to capture some of the feeling of that last evening light, the blue sky and the gold-silver alloy quality of the light that was cast over everything … presence of very high, thin cirrus clouds put a slight gray cast in the late evening gold, although the clouds themselves were invisible unless you were directly looking toward the area around the sun and observed how white the sky was because of the reflection on those clouds.
But then there was the vibe under that light, so hard to put into words. By way of context: 2,000,000 people are in San Francisco on a work day, and the majority of them work within 1-2 miles of the Embarcadero, along and around Market Street. Add on several tens of thousands of tourists at this time of year as well. So: downtown San Francisco is quite hectic, and rush hour extends to about 7pm as a million people are moving here and there.
However, you would never have known it on the Embarcadero yesterday. It was as cool and calm and warm and relaxed as if what had just happened just two blocks away had never happened and would not happen ever again – the vibe was just amazing, and here I work to express it in music, the language that deals with things words cannot …
