3 October 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3245:: prince of lies
“The thing is, if your father is the prince of lies, and you are a devoted member of his family, you probably are pretty good at lying – and the truth is still going to blow you right down.”
“You know how some people can just end your whole existence with one sentence?” eleven-year-old Velma Trent said to her nine-year-old brother Milton.
“No, but I just learned,” Milton said as he started backing up into a run. “I feel the need to go clean my room in case Grandma Jubilee wants to go in there.”
21-year-old Melvin and 18-year-old Vanna Trent, eldest siblings to Velma and Milton, were cracking up.
“See, anybody else would have just said 'You dumb son of the devil, I already know what you are doing and I'm about to blow up the spot,' but no – not Grandma Jubilee!” Melvin said as Mrs. Gladys Jubilee Trent, their father's mother, got her keys and her mask and went out to her little car and drove off.
“Yeah, but see, she just left him all confused so he ain't gonna know she's coming until she is back here and his whole world is coming to an end!” Vanna said.
“Which is what I just said,” Velma said. “Basically, if Grandma Jubilee has to call you on your business practices, it's already too late.”
“Like, how many stop signs have you blown through in your life to get here?” Vanna said.
“Should have just given Cousin Glenda her money back … now the whole Jubilee-of-the-mountain machine has been digging all up into everything!” Melvin said. “See, back in the day, the Jubilees might truly have just blown up the spot, but in the 21st century, you get to live while all your stuff comes down around you!”
“Sometimes!” Vanna said.
“Like I said,” Velma said.
Milton came back.
“Let me see your phone, Velma, thanks – hey, Eleanor! Put George on the phone for a second – hey, George, Grandma Jubilee is on one, so if you haven't cleaned your room in case she drops in at your house, you might want to do that. Oh … oh yeah, I forgot that your grandfather is the one on one, 24/7, at your house – well, in case he drops in over here, I'm good now both ways.”
