“That's the thing about living large and in charge; you still gotta stop before you put a knife into a power outlet.”

“Ain't it the truth, Glendella, ain't it the truth.”

Ten-year-old Glendella Ludlow and eight-year-old Gracie Trent both lived in houses that were reading the retrospective of all the politicians who had fallen in Lofton County in 2019 and 2020, and the two girls were making the best sense of it all that they could.

“Because all kinds of charge and power are not for you to just run up on,” Glendella said. “It's like God has to fit you with the plugs and wires and stuff so you can be a good cord and handle all that.”

“This must be why Moses couldn't see the burning bush until he had forty years of keeping sheep,” Gracie said.

“You know that does make sense,” Glendella said, “although what happened in Smallwood last year kinda proves my point again.”

“Oh yeah we heard about that because I have a cousin who lives up there,” Gracie said, “and was telling us the front yard competition at Christmas was so out of hand that a yard burst into flames.”

“Real burning bushes, Gracie,” Glendella said. “Man plugged in his super-duper display before he remembered he hadn't completely upgraded the electrical in his house. But that just goes to show you – AGAIN – if you aren't in charge right, it doesn't matter how large you are.”

“I guess he won the yard competition for brightest display, though,” Gracie said.

“Yeah, but burning your yard down doesn't count,” Glendella said, “and the other thing is, the last thing you want for New Year's Day is for your homeowners' association to hand you that kind of bill.”
