Qué bueno encontrarnos otra vez en la calle para juntos descubrir un poco de la gran cantidad de arte que hay en cualquier calle de nuestras ciudades, ya sean pinturas murales, grafitis, esculturas, etc.

I made this creation on O'Reilly Street, very close to the corner with Amargura in Old Havana, and it marks a turning point in my life as a painter, as it is part of my return to the capital's properties after nearly fifteen years away from an environment to which I was very frequent.

In addition, it was the first mural that I painted outdoors individually, since I had already participated in that experience in collaboration with other artists.

Esta creación la realicé en la calle O'Reilly, muy cerca de la esquina con Amargura en La Habana Vieja, y marca un punto de giro en mi vida como pintor, pues es parte de mi regreso a los predios capitalinos después de cerca de quince años alejado de un entorno al que era muy asiduo.

Además, fue el primer mural que pinté en un exterior de forma individual, pues ya había participado en esa experiencia en colaboración con otros artistas.

Today I was going very hurriedly and almost unconsciously down the narrow street of O'Reilly, as they say, cutting off the path, and suddenly I was reunited with this work that I carried out in quite stressful conditions due to the characteristics of the environment, the size of the wall, the working conditions and the resources, in addition to the pressure with the responsibility that I had accepted when I said yes to the person who invited me to carry out the work.

Hoy bajaba de forma muy apresurada y casi inconsciente por la estrecha calle de O'Reilly, como se dice, cortando camino, y de pronto me reencontré con esta obra que ejecuté en condiciones bastante estresantes por las características del entorno, el tamaño de la pared, las condiciones de trabajo y los recursos, además de la presión con la responsabilidad que había aceptado cuando dije que sí a quien me convidó a realizar la obra.

So, I stopped to observe almost a year later, from how it is preserved to the things I did or didn't do at that time. The first challenge I had to take on was the rectangular and vertical format of the wall, topped at the upper end by a lattice with hexagonal holes that could generate aesthetic noise in the final finish.

Entonces, me detuve a observar casi un año después, desde cómo se conserva hasta las cosas que hice o dejé de hacer en aquel momento. El primer reto que tuve que asumir fue el formato rectangular y vertical de la pared, rematada en el extremo superior por una celosía con huecos hexagonales que podía generar un ruido estético en el acabado final.

The central theme was the figure of José Martí, the most universal of Cubans. But I did not want it to be a work full of poetic dream as we usually imagine the master, so I painted the head of the character with his idylls in the center of the plane, in the sky part, over a chaotic and deteriorated city in accordance with the real environment.

Then, in Martí's face I accentuated a questioning character because he was witnessing the anti-dream of his own work.

El tema central era la figura de José Martí, el más universal de los cubanos. Pero no quería que fuera una obra llena de ensueño poético como solemos imaginar al maestro, por lo que pinté la cabeza del personaje con sus idilios en el centro del plano, en la parte del cielo, sobre una ciudad caótica y deteriorada en concordancia con el entorno real.

Entonces, en el rostro de Martí acentué un carácter cuestionador por estar siendo testigo del antisueño de su propia obra.

In front of the mural, I remembered all the adventures during the execution. I go like the tightrope walker I was on the unsafe staircase, trying to paint the upper plane, and the adventures to cope with the lack or scarcity of some colors and thinner. And I couldn't be a passive spectator.

I liked seeing people sitting on a slope in front of the mural; It gave me the impression that they were harmoniously integrated, since the work reaches the level of the sidewalk

Frente al mural, recordé todas las peripecias durante la ejecución. Me voy como el equilibrista que fui sobre la escalera insegura, tratando de pintar el plano superior, y las peripecias para arreglármelas con la falta o escasez de algunos colores y diluyente. Y no pude ser un espectador pasivo.

Me gustó ver personas sentadas en un subiente frente al mural; me daba la impresión de que se integraban armónicamente, pues la obra llega hasta el nivel de la acera.
