Ipoh is one of the oldest mining town(now city) in Malaysia. It is famous with street art and graffiti, good food and it's old town. However, this photo was shoot in new town yo π€£
You see, the old town now become too famous and has become seriously overrated and overly crowded by tourists. New town, which is across the Kinta river offer just as much old back alleys that has outgrown trees from buildings.
One of the significant restaurant many failed to noticed, is actually a this restaurant Haji Yahya. Back in my school days, I was shock to found they fried chicken skin and use the frying oil to make their noodle. Extremely tasty and old school.
Not far from the halal street hawker, is the cultural street of Ipoh. I myself found it's has very little to do with actual culture, but more of a food street. The old yellow Lou Wong bean sprout chicken and many cookies shops are all here.
The most famous Happy Mountain soy bean is here and has long queue during its operating hours. Me as a locale, grown up here, they don't really mean much to me. Also park 1 street ahead, ample of parking space there.
And we take our soy bean drink and soft bean curd the next street where there's only local sitting in and enjoy our food without having to rush with the tourists.
The famous Pak Kong chicken rice shop is also walking distance. So near we decided must pack for my parents since they haven't been enjoying this kind of old taste for a very long time.
You see, not only you need to wait for your seat, even take away needed a number before you can start ordering. Once again, this is Ipoh. Business owners are arrogant. You can't tell them your orders unless being asked upon π€£
After patiently waited for an hour, and witnessing some other patron come and get offended and go, we the good customers finally got our food π€£ The bill came to RM48. That's $11 with today's exchange rate. For 6 person lunch.
And the white cut chicken(η½ζ©ιΈ‘οΌ sorry I had to direct translate it. It means steamed chicken (white), cut chicken does not require explanation, truly
When all the tourists is rushing their way into the concubine lane in Ipoh old town, let me show you around some of the less crowded, local price tag, and seriously underrated place.
I grew up in this small mining town(now a city) and very proud of our food culture, and also our infamous arrogant behaviour π€£ I mean not everyone an asshole here, but majority of the people I know, the business owner I know, the hawker food operator I know, are arrogant π€£ they(we) drive slow, but we can't let other people pass us, or it will be seen as a rolling start challenge. When there's more then 3 cars waiting inline at the traffic stops, that's traffic jam π€£ there are many more behaviour here are annoying funny, but we live we learn.
I just can't help it, and can't get enough opportunity to introduce the "locale" perspective of Ipoh since I'm now a half tourist. What can I say, I've been out of town for decades now, and everytime when I return to my home town, I will be saying "these Ipoh fellas" and then realized I am one of "them" π€£
