Wednesday
That morning, as I walked up the stairs to the second floor toward my classroom, I kept reflecting on what had happened the day before. After asking the same question five times—and getting four "yeses" and one "maybe"—statistically speaking, I knew it was an overwhelming answer.
When I reached my floor, I noticed that the room where they stored the cleaning supplies was unlocked and open. It caught my curiosity because it had always been locked tight ever since two bullies grabbed two brooms to beat each other up earlier that year. But every thought in my mind dissolved when I saw one of my classmates sitting at the teacher's desk. Our teacher was trying to push back the crowd of onlookers, while two other students were waving their notebooks to fan her. The girl was visibly pale, frozen in absolute panic, unable to speak, with tears streaming desperately down her cheeks. She tried to talk, but her words were suffocated by her own desperation.
The school secretary and the principal rushed upstairs, visibly frightened yet determined. In a firm voice, they ordered everyone to sit at their desks. We all obeyed, but none of us took our eyes off our classmate. Amidst the commotion, my teacher said, "She's in shock, take her." As my classmate tried to walk, her knees buckled as if they were too weak to support her weight, but the principal and the secretary helped her out anyway. The last thing I heard was the principal ordering someone to fetch a glass of water with sugar... after that, there was only silence. My teacher, after watching her student leave the room, walked slowly toward her desk and, with a long sigh, buried her face in her hands, resting her elbows on the cold surface.
I wanted to hug her, or at least place a hand on her back, because I knew what the entire class had gotten into. But I couldn't hold back and asked the classmate behind me—who happened to be one of the kids fanning her with a notebook—what had happened. He replied, "No, man... it seems she saw the front door open, and inside, she saw the mop and the bucket covered in blood. Everything in there was covered in blood. Right after telling us that, she turned like that. It's the worst thing I've ever seen." Terrified by the heavy atmosphere in the room, I answered him, "No, that's not the worst of it."
I went on to tell him that weeks earlier, my mother and I were in our bedroom when we saw my sister dart down the hallway and lock herself in the bathroom. My mother and I exchanged looks, thinking she was in a hurry because we even heard the lock turn from the inside. But about an hour later, my sister arrived home from school with my cousin. My mother turned to me, stunned: "Wait... then who went into the bathroom?" When we went to check, the door was locked from the inside, and I had to jump through the window to open it, as no one was answering after repeatedly knocking. I added that a cold shiver ran from my feet all the way up to my ribs as I walked through that empty bathroom to check the door, confirming that the lock had engaged all by itself without anyone ever being inside.
Thursday
I was walking down the street on my way to school, dodging adults coming in the opposite direction. Then, out of nowhere, Johana appeared again, trying to startle me. But this time I jumped, and from the shock, I dropped my backpack. The air left my lungs, but I tried in vain to pretend I was just stooping down to tie my shoelaces. Laughing playfully, she ran her hands through my hair, tousled it tenderly, and said with her contagious smile: "See you later." Just like that, she disappeared into the crowd, giving me one last glance right before vanishing. I continued my way through the morning mist, which was so dense it hid the mountains far beyond the boulevard.
I entered the school, reviewing the multiplication tables in my head, knowing they would surely test us today, as they did every Thursday. After singing a brief version of the national anthem, we lined up to head up to our classrooms, but the order broke down as soon as we started climbing the stairs. Seconds later, I felt that familiar cold shiver creeping up to my ribs as we passed the first floor.
Further ahead, children began shouting. One of them broke into a desperate sprint toward the classroom, shoving others out of the way. I managed to catch a glimpse of him frantically shaking his body, screaming in terror and pain. Panic spread as children scrambled out of his way. My teacher, who was leading the line, had just unlocked the classroom door. Before I even reached the doorway, she gasped with visible fear in her eyes: "What is this? What happened here?"
Right then, the boy pushed past her and, in a panic, tore off his mandatory navy-blue sweater, then his white shirt, standing in his undershirt right in front of the teacher. I walked in at that exact moment, and this time, the shock was collective: all the desks in the classroom had been moved against the walls, facing toward the center. But... how? The classroom is always locked when we leave, and our school didn't have an afternoon shift. I looked at my teacher as she covered her mouth with both hands, whispering, "My God!"
Then I saw it. My classmate had dark pinch-like bruises scattered all over his chest, back, and arms. He was frantically rubbing the bruised spots, trying to swallow his fear, though he couldn't swallow his tears. After stammering out an explanation of what he had felt, the teacher peeked out into the stairwell, looking for a possible swarm of bees or insects that never existed.
Strangely enough, his bruises began to fade away, and the boy put his uniform back on in front of everyone, ignoring the teacher, who was telling him to go do it in the bathroom—he simply refused to step out of the room. Resigned and open to any explanation, the teacher asked us what on earth was going on. That's when Boris stood up and explained to her that he, the bruised classmate, and another boy had gathered at a house over the weekend to play the Ouija board, and that these inexplicable events had started right after. The teacher motioned for him to sit down, gathered as much authority as she could, and gave us an order—the very first regarding everything that was happening: "From now on, I don't want to see anyone playing those coin games ever again."
Well, being who I am, searching for answers and reasons, I secretly shook my hand with my pair of coins and asked a couple of questions: "Was it you?" I received three "yeses" and two "nos." Naturally, I realized its strength was growing. I followed up with the next question—the one that terrified me the most: "Do you want to leave?"
I received four "nos" and a single "maybe."
