Throwback to a day out last Autumn
On a cold, wintery day in November, I got the chance to go visit Donna Nook, which is a Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve on the east coast of the UK.
At this time of year it is one of the key breeding sites for the Grey Seal in the UK, and as expected there were seals as far as the eye could see. It can be very busy at peak times as people from across the country visit the area, we went during the week when it was much quieter.
The female seals choose this time of year to come up on to the beach to give birth to their pups, who are seriously cute. The pups have about 3 weeks to drink as much of their mothers milk and put on as much weight as possible as the mother will then abandon them and mate again. A few weeks later all the seals have returned to the water to spend the Winter at sea.
We had an awesome day, and saw our fair share of adults and pups, but we didn't get to see any new pups being born which would have been a highlight. We'll try our luck again later this year.
