Feeling a bit pensive

October 9th is an interesting and important day in the world of cats, particularly for those of us who started out as shelter cats. This day is also known as "CATober 9th."

This day was created to be the official and observed birthday of the many shelter cats whose birth dates are not actually known.

The day was originated by the North Shore Animal League charity in the US (The world's largest no-kill animal rescue organization) as a result of several rescue organizations agreeing that "anonymous" shelter cats should have a birthday of their own!

October 9th was also chosen as the date because cats allegedly have nine lives, and when they start a new life in a forever home, they should come with an official birthday.

With all of us here having been shelter cats — except for Smudge — this day is meaningful as something to draw attention to... even if we do know Shadow, Shangri and Nala's actual birthdays.

One of the ways you can support the cause of shelter cats is to buy an official Catober 9th birth certificate for your furry friend through one of the rescue organizations supporting this initiative. (Please be mindful that there are also scammers trying to capitalize on this day!)

While there is no official way to observe CATober 9th, a kitty birthday party is always a good choice... with new toys, extar playtime and maybe a few snacks!

As always, the best "gift" you can give to your feline friends is to spend time with them!

Cat Snaps by @manorvillemike is a place to post pictures of your cats when you don't have a whole lot to say beyond just sharing your cute photos!

Caturday by @saboin is a community where we get to celebrate posts relating to Saturday — aka "Caturday" — our own special day!

Cat Photos by @andrarchy is a "mixed use" cat content community; posts can be just photos or longer, as long as the subject is CATS!

Cats by @captainklaus (and Sissi!) is another "general" cat content community.

There are a number of other feline communities listed on Hive, but I am not sharing them for now as they have not had any activity (by their Admins OR users) since the Steem/Hive fork. Updates as they become available!
