Blood Ketone Tests and Christmas Foods - [More Experiments] - 1.jpg

I recently bought a blood glucose-ketone meter because I wanted to be more 'granular' and know precisely whether or not I am in ketosis as a result of changes in my diet.

After about a week and some tweaking, I manage to see blood ketones consistently above 0.5 mmol/L, which is considered nutritional ketosis.

Christmas approached and I decided to remain ketotic because I literally have no preferred foods (high-carb) that I cannot find keto alternatives to (the keto cheesecake being one of them).

So, I tested my blood levels before my main Christmas meal:

  • 7 PM - BG (blood glucose) 65mg/dL, BOHB (ketones) 1.5mmol/L

We had the Christmas meal between 10 PM and midnight (2 hours) and I had about:

  • 2131 kcals, 110 grams of protein, 177 grams of fat, and 43 grams of total carbs (24 grams net carbs)

Then, I tested my blood levels two hours after, so at 2 AM:

  • 2 AM - BG 79mg/dL, BOHB 1.3 mmol/L

I would have not been surprised to see lower ketone levels given the amount of protein I consumed, so, it was nice to see that 1.3 mmol/L.

Then in the morning (today) I was also ketotic (BG is higher in the morning and ketones are lower - in healthy people) as my BG was 81mg/dL and BOHB was 1.0 mmol/L. I wrote a more detailed insight about this experiment, for the geeks, on my personal blog:
