Could you be more flexible? You surely had this question asked to you at least one time throughout your life. Flexibility as we know it has always been a volatile concept. More than often we changed the meaning of it and acted as flexible as we wanted to. My inflexibility is an answer to your high demand of flexibility from my part. Counterproductive, resentful and child-like, our ambition to hang on to what we want in spite of the other, is now a new norm of the modern individualism. We have the freedom to choose how we behave and we see personal progress as being more important than social cohesion. The individual, la liberte, carpe diem. All this inflexibility in the name of the individual or in the name of the ego?
The alternative that flexibility presents can be seen in two ways: compromise or win-win. A word that many despise, compromise has something of a loser tinge in it. When we think of compromise, we think of loss. I lose something in order to maintain a calm status quo. People compromise at work, in love, in friendships. With what cost? The fear and repulsion brought by the "be more flexible" request triggers an emotional battle inside our mind. A win-lose situation. Is being flexible truly a loss? Depends on how you're seeing the whole picture. Being flexible can also bring a win to your backyard as well as to your neighbor/partner/coworker. Being flexible and also maintaining your boundaries can increase the likelihood of an improved relationship. We evolve through the others and an inflexible individual is always producing more damage to himself by routinely sticking to his fixations without questioning them.
An ode brought to the modern individual should encourage cooperation, understanding, finding a middle ground. With both parties feeling respected and valued. We can't advance individually as it's being praised now. Every man for himself. Stubborn sticks always break if you're trying to make a structure with them. Flexibility as we need it is more than compromise. It's a revised concept of vision. We see the world through the lens of our abilities. The more you hang on to your sticks, the more you break.
