If I had $1000 then I would be hitting the road ASAP! It's hard to beat a good road trip and they're just about the best for going adventuring on a shoestring budget. Lots of the photos I post on here come from my first major road trip, back in 2017, when I hit the road for 79 days, covering a little over 10,000 miles (16,000km) during that time. Even before I was back home from that trip I was already thinking up ideas for my next adventure.
While my 2017 trip cost a little bit more than $1000 (several times that actually), the idea I settled on for my next grand adventure had a much lower price tag. I'd spent most of the first trip out west, running around in the mountains and gallivanting along the Pacific coast so I figured a change of pace would be nice and started looking for warm, low elevation places to visit.
Where I'd Go
If I had a grand in my pocket, I'd load up the car and make tracks for the Everglades National Park down on the southern tip of Florida. I'm a big fan of warmer weather and right about now is the perfect time to be visiting, not only would I get to see a place I've wanted to visit since I was a kid but would also get to dodge the cold, wet, dreary weather we have here currently (its 76F or 24 C there currently).
For me, part of the fun of going to new places is learning how to survive in new/different environments. I tend to travel solo and like to get out in the backcountry, there's sometimes not much margin for error out that way which kinda adds to the fun. On my first trip I got to practice on mountains and high elevation as well as a bit of desert, I figure going to the swamps would be a nice change of pace from that, plus I've never really got to spend much time in them.
You can make money go a lot further on a road trip by camping, especially in the Everglades I'd do that as much as possible. The backcountry there has some rather interesting places I'd love to camp in, there's chickees (shelters with raised floors on posts) and a 'dark skies' area at the southern part of the park that looks like it would make for some great night time photography.

The photo above is of my last glimpse of the ocean, taken on my 2017 road trip right before I headed back east. I've been jonesing for the salt smell of the ocean breeze and sounds of the water since. Unless something is changed since I last looked, I think two weeks is the longest you can stay out camping in the park, once they run me off from the Everglades my next destination would be the bayous of the Mississippi River delta.
I've spent a good bit of time on the Florida panhandle in the past, revisiting it for a bit while on my way to the bayou would be hard to pass up. There's a place called the Indian Pass Raw Bar that has the best seafood I've ever ate, I'd have to at least stop and spend a little of the $1000 there.
As I was researching stuff for this adventure I discovered that there's nothing on pinmapple from the swamps and bayous of the delta of the Mississippi, just some stuff from New Orleans. I'm not sure how long $1000 would last me but there's so many national forests and wildlife refugees in the area that I could spend far more time adventuring there than it would cover. My road trips are usually quite open ended, I plan the next few days at a time and then see where I (and my bank account) are at and then go from there until I barely have enough money to make it back home.
With covid and all that's going on with it, being out in the swamps sounds like just about the best place to be. Most of the photography I do works best out away from the cities, between that and the extra costs that come with urban areas I would avoid them if at all possible. I've never been to New Orleans so I may have to make an exception just long enough to see the French Quarter but since I retired from drinking it doesn't hold quite the appeal and wouldn't stay long most likely.
Since I started with a Townes song for the road, I'll close this with another one about coming home. Aside from lodging, food, and petrol I don't have much in the way of expenses when I'm out adventuring so I can make a grand last for quite some time. As you can see from this I'd spend pretty much all of that time out in the swamps, feeding the mosquitoes and shooting anything that catches my eye!
