Ever did the photowalk? It's like moonwalking, but with more gravity and a camera. This past Sunday, a dozen or so photographers met up in the NuLu neighborhood east of downtown to do exactly that.

A couple local photographers organized the shindig, went the whole nine yards too; sponsors, prizes, even partnered with four of the neighborhood businesses to open their doors for us to explore and experiment.

There were supposed to be models, but I think the rain scared'em off. We met up at Goldie's Coffee at 1000 and then spent the next four hours gallivanting around the neighborhood. Had rolled with just my 85mm prime to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself, in which regard I was quite successful.

One shop that welcomed us, Unvanish, was all vintage clothing and accessories, if the models had shown, it would've been hard to get us out of there.

I've done plenty of solo photowalks in NuLu, but doing it with a bunch of other photogs was something else entirely. The more the merrier it seems, was nice to get to meet other local photogs and talk shop, plus when there's a dozen of you running around with cameras it makes folks perplexed and bemused rather than suspicious.

All of us left the coffee shop with a colored wristband and a sheet of paper with a schedule and photo challenges on it. Saved the paper, thought it might come in handy for organizing my own photowalk, including the challenges below so y'all can too.

PHOTO CHALLENGE - TRY AT LEAST 5!

  • Photograph someone new (ask first)

  • Capture a cinematic portrait

  • Experiment with motion blur

  • Find an interesting reflection

  • Take three photos matching your wristband color

  • Shoot from an unexpected angle

  • Collaborate with another creative

  • Capture one portfolio-worth "hero shot"

My wristband color was red, promise this Chevy was too. While the whole adventure was great, the weather was anything but. Didn't actually rain much, just was gloomy and threatening with the occasional shower and nary a sign of the sun. Had expected that to keep people away, but the neighborhood was actually pretty lively with a chili festival on a side street and a band rocking out as folks wandered about.

Eventually we had to part ways but we're already talking about the next one. Who else likes to do the photowalk?
