"Just a word of warning, visibility is only about thirty feet on down the road a bit."

This is news? In hindsight I probably should have taken the park ranger's warning a little more seriously. Still, half the country had been burning for the past month and visibility had been shit for weeks. Hell, the park had been closed the week before due to wildfires and portions of the road leading to it you could still only travel if you were following a pilot car.

A bit down the road I discovered what the ranger was talking about. Snow. Fucking snow. This shit isn't supposed to happen in the middle of September! What sort of foreign hell is this?

A white, snowy one. The closer I got to Crater Lake, the less I could see. Well, I could see that I wasn't going to be taking too many photos there...

Without warning there's a break in the weather, a five minute glimpse of the lake and then party's over! Snow swirls back in, the lake not to be seen again. At least I won't have trouble finding a spot to camp... Who needs reservations in weather like this?

Plenty of spots to camp, covered with plenty of soggy slush. You can camp in a snowy swamp if you'd like but I'm sleeping in the car. Side note: Ford Focuses are not designed for sleeping.

Morning finds me convinced I can see Russia from my sleeping bag. It'd dropped another four inches of snow overnight and everything is blanketed in white. No let-up in the wind and snow, I have to build a windbreak just to brew up my morning tea. Did I mention I hate cold weather?

Let's go see what the rangers have to say today. Three to five more inches on the way?!?!?!?! No thanks, I'm out! Where do you go to get away from snow?

Right, a desert. Mr. Sulu, set course for Nevada!

When does it snow in your area? Snow in September is unheard of where I live, we rarely see it before December (if then). Stay warm!
