Manos Milagrosas, una película inspiradora para ver con hijos adolescentes 🤩 / Gifted Hands, an inspiring movie to watch with teenagers 😍 (ES/EN)
As a mother of teenagers I like to read about topics that deal with how to guide and direct them to be good people for society. A few days ago I had the opportunity to watch with my 14 year old son the movie "Miracle Hands", a 2009 movie directed by Thomas Carter and starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kimberly Elise, inspired by the life story of American pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
The film tells the story of an African-American boy who begins his life with everything against him, living in a home with only his mother, low grades in school, and a life where Ben and his brother spend all day in front of the television. His mother, a woman who only studied until the third grade, takes between two and three jobs, mostly cleaning, to cover basic expenses and make ends meet.
One day the principal of her children's school called her to complain about her son Ben's poor grades, and she immediately said, "I'll take care of it. Upon leaving the principal's office, the mother talked to her son Ben and did so without criticizing him, telling him that he was a smart boy, that he was not using his intelligence. She made him see that if he continued with those grades he would spend the rest of his life scrubbing floors in a factory and that's not what she wanted for him. Immediately upon arriving home, at lunchtime she began to assign schoolwork to her children making them see that they were smart kids capable of achieving good results if they worked at it, she also began to restrict their hours of playing in the street with their friends and told them that they would not go out until they completed their homework, all this she did even when her children complained and told her "come on mom... you are the meanest mother in the world."
Then she turned off the TV, the kids kept complaining about that act telling her that all the kids watched TV to which she replied "I don't care about the others, the world is full of everyone else (wanting her children to understand that she wanted them to stand out from the crowd), "from now on you will watch two pre-selected programs per week" she told them, to which the kids responded with astonishment "per week?" "are you crazy, that's crazy" "and then what will we do with the free time? To which she replied "I'm glad you asked, you will go to the library and look for two books and at the end of the week you will give me a report of what you have read". The boys complained and complained assuring their mother that they could not survive without television, but she firmly told them that they would start from that very moment not to waste time, that if they used that time to develop their gifts they would soon be watching them on television.
Ben was a boy with a bad temper, angry on one occasion arguing with his mother because of his disagreement with the clothes she bought them almost hit her with a hammer and on another occasion even as a teenager almost killed a friend, for making fun of the type of music that Ben listened to on the radio, it was a terrible moment for Ben but that was when he decided to change.
He managed to become a great student with extraordinary reading comprehension skills. He worked very hard and managed to get a scholarship to Yale University to study medicine and graduate.
While working at John Hopkins Hospital as a resident in an emergency, he performed unsupervised surgery, risking his career to save a man's life. Thus began his career as a leading neurosurgeon.
It is a story that is really worth watching with our children, it is a real story of struggle, of overcoming, of work and responsibility in which in moments of despondency, the confidence of a mother for her son launches Ben to fly towards the best of himself, with phrases of confidence such as: "You have the whole world inside you... you just have to see beyond what you see".
