Iwo Jima Memorial 1oz Silver Round

Today we take a break from the usual commemoratives and I present to my newest acquisition from Monument Metals. It is the Iwo Jima Memorial 1oz Silver Round from their Washington Series. It contains 1 troy oz of .999 silver and has a mintage of 100,000.

There are no plans for me to grab the rest of the series at this time. Being a retired Marine, but I just had to have this one.

Displayed in the image above is the new license plate frame I purchased with the Iwo round in the middle, along with another non-silver half dollar commemorative to the right and a challenge coin to the left. Maybe one day I will share my collection of challenge coins even though they are not precious metals.

OBVERSE

Displayss the Iwo Jima Memorial which is located in Washington D.C. The United States shows its appreciation for Marines and those who fought with them through this memorial. It represents one of the most well known World War II events, the flag raising on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. The memorial however is intended to honor all Marines who have died since 1775 defending the United States.

Some of the war's toughest fighting took place at the Battle of Iwo Jima. The capture of Mount Suribachi was one of the initial goals after arriving at the beachhead. on the fourth day of the assault (February 23, 1945), Joe Rosenthal captured six Marines flying the American flag at the second raising atop the peak.

REVERSE

Displays the Washington D.C. city skyline along with the weight of the round and its purity. Prominent is the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, and White House along with 5 stars. Of course Monument Metals has to place their DNA on the round toward the bottom rim of the round.
