These are so freaking good, it was my first time trying them and I have to say I was blown away, they look like giant blueberries, they are extremely sweet and when young have the texture and color of pitaya and when mature are more like raisins, both ways are good!
These beauties are called Garambullo and are native to Mexico. I was told the native women in this region (central mexico near san miguel de allende) sometimes used the berries as a natural lipstick for their deep red color.
It took a long time to pick the amount in this bowl due to the amount of spikes on the cactus, some are more spikey than others, some get very tall and many giant juicy berries were out of reach. Another reason I was unable to collect that many was because of the fact I was eating alot of them whilst picking them. I must of needed it, they are meant to be super healthy particularly good for your digestion.
I spotted a flower which im guessing eventually turns into the berry and you can see theres a dry crinkled flower at the end of each berry that i picked, there werent many blooming flowers, this was one of two i spotted, so i guess berry season was in full swing, however some berries were still a little under ripe.
I always love trying new fruits, im always surprised by the delicious delights our mother earth has to offer:)
