I’ve been a bit off the rails with my health routine recently, mainly missing my morning exercises because it’s been too warm. Yesterday and today have been much cooler, so I thought it was the best time to get back into it.
I always take the quiet road around here, where hardly any cars pass by, and if they do, the speed limit is only 20 mph.
The surroundings are looking dry on my run today, although the fresh breeze made the whole lot better.
I also noticed that many of the seeds are almost ready to be collected, like these dock seeds. I grind them into flour and add them to my biscuit recipe.
Another seed I enjoy collecting is hogweed. I often send some to friends as a little gift because they make a great substitute for cumin or fennel seeds. I also like adding them to biscuits and curries.
Along the way, there were plenty of wheat fields. I always enjoy seeing the hay bales dotted across the landscape. Farmers use them for animal bedding and feed. I once used straw around my strawberry plants to keep the fruit off the soil, which helped prevent rot and kept the berries nice and clean.
I also noticed that the berries are starting to ripen. These elderberries will soon be ready, which means it’ll be time to make another batch of elderberry wine.
And, of course, my all-time favourites, blackberries!
This is my favourite time of year to go for a walk or run because on my way back I can stop to pick a handful of ripe blackberries. They’re plump, juicy and sweet!
Thanks to the burdock leaf, I get to pick plenty, so I sat down and munched on them. They tasted ten times more delicious because I was thirsty.
Have a lovely day.
