Hellooo, Alien Art community! I hope you're having a day with lots of sparkles.
Today I bring you a drawing I made, but before publishing it, I felt I no longer liked the result, so I took pencil and paper, along with black color and a pen, and started analyzing what I didn't like about my previous drawing, so I could do it differently and thus "improve" it. Join me in this process below!
This was the drawing I made first. Something I didn't like about this drawing, specifically, was the eyes. My initial idea was to make them like a doll's, but I feel it came out anime, and I don't like that. Also, that little ball on the nose came out too dark, not to mention those lines I made on the cheeks; I don't know what I wanted to achieve with that. In general, it looks flat to me, because it doesn't convey anything I wanted. Time to redraw it.
With quick strokes, I made a sketch. For the face I used guide lines and circular shapes to denote each feature. There are three circles because the distance between each eye should be, of course, one eye.
Not only did I make a sketch for the face, but I also followed the advice I've heard quite a lot, and made a sketch of the whole drawing, in general terms, like the hat, the body and the clothes. I have practically no experience drawing bodies, but you have to start somewhere; in this case I liked how it looks, although I'm very sure it's not anatomically accurate. Would you tell me if it is?
The next thing was to shape the facial features. One of the main things I fixed was the nose, making it similar to the previous drawing, but with a bit more depth. I drew the lips giving much more prominence to the upper lip, as some dolls usually are. And the eyes, big, round, with very thin eyebrows, which was my main idea in the previous drawing, but a mistake ruined them.
The next thing was to outline with a pen and pass an eraser over it. This time I used a "thicker" pen, because one of the mistakes in the previous drawing was that the ink was too fluid and ran on the paper.
With the black color I outlined the whole drawing; I felt I had ruined it, but wait for the final result and you'll tell me if I ruined it.
With the black color I started coloring the hair, with fluid lines downward like real hair. Also with quick straight lines I provided detail to the clothing: folds, ruffles, gathers and so on.
Lastly, I added shadows where I saw necessary. I like to give a lot of shadows to the gaze, and I think that completely changed the vibes of the drawing.
Now yes, the drawing represents my vision much more: a theatrical face, but at the same time expressionless, eyebrows so thin they barely cast a shadow, an impassive pose and clothing with more depth. I think my mistake in the previous drawing was the excessive use of ink.
Which one do you prefer? Both have very different vibes. See you in the next post, mwah.
