Everyone has their own definition of luxury. For me, one luxury I feel is completely overrated is iPhone. iPhone already has its name. It has a beautiful camera , its features are good, and generally, iPhones are very nice phones. But somehow, owning one has gradually look like a symbol of success.
Some people buy it because they genuinely like the phone and what it offers. Some buy it because they don't want to miss out on the trend, while others simply want to experience what the hype is all about.
For me, though, I don't see anything particularly special about it. Even if I decide to go for an iPhone, I think it would probably be because of its size and portability because I like sizeable phones. But when it comes to some of its other features, I personally feel they are overrated.
There are other phones with cameras that can compete with, or even outperform, an iPhone's camera. There are also phones with stronger batteries and other impressive features. Yet, I still wonder why the iPhone has been marked as a symbol of luxury.
I think one of the things that made the iPhone so overhyped is the number of people using it. When almost everyone around you has one, not having one can somehow make you feel outdated.
Some thinks having an iPhone is an achievement. Some even want to own one by all means, regardless of whether they genuinely need it or can comfortably afford it.
Then the real problem is the pressure to upgrade whenever a new model is released. Like… gosh! Why the pressure?
You still have a perfectly functioning phone, but because a new model has been released, suddenly the phone in your hand feels outdated.
And then the cycle begins, Get a new one → enjoy it for a while → a new model launches → feel outdated → upgrade again.
Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is definitely a very good phone. I am not denying that. But I honestly think it is overhyped. There are other phones that can function just as well, and in some areas, even better. It all comes down to what the individual needs from a phone.
I also think there is a misconception that the more expensive something is, the better or more superior it must be.
But expensive doesn't always mean better. Sometimes, we are paying for the brand, the prestige, or simply the feeling that comes with owning something considered luxurious.
And honestly, I don't think a phone should determine how successful someone is.
Having an iPhone doesn't make someone more successful than the person using another brand. Neither does using a cheaper phone make someone less successful. At the end of the day, it's just a phone not a measure of success.
So, to me, an iPhone is not a luxury. It's a good phone that has been turned into a status symbol. And I think the status attached to it is far more overrated than the phone itself.
