Cecilia hated sleeping at night because she felt that taking a rest at night, especially during the rainy season, had nothing to do with resting. Instead, it felt more like she was preparing for a military operation.
The enemy? Mosquitoes!!
Despite how tiny these insects may look, they have mastered the art of keeping a person awake for hours. And lately, Cecilia has concluded that insecticide has no effect on them. The war begins the moment they notice that she has finally laid her head down to sleep.
Like thieves in the night, they surround her room. Some take up their favourite position her ear, where they hum their annoying songs. Then the pregnant mosquitoes feast on her skin, sucking her blood. No matter how hard she tries to get rid of them, she sometimes ends up slapping herself in the process, making her wonder if she is fighting the mosquitoes or fighting herself.
Once she switches on the light, all their operations seem to come to a halt. It is as if the mosquitoes know they are being searched for and are about to be killed.
She switches off the light. The attack begins again!!!
This time, more fierce, and accompanied by that irritating buzzing sound. If she turns from one side of the bed to the other, they follow her. When she decides to cover herself with a blanket, they keep calm. But the moment she uncovers her face to breathe, they resume their humming, as if they have been waiting patiently for her ear to reappear.
At this point, Cecilia has accepted that her room is under siege by mosquitoes. The battle continues because, as tiny as these creatures are, they seem to possess an unlimited supply of energy. They don't get tired. They don't get discouraged. They are simply too persistent.
