Mix and match Castle Hill suburbs and Seven Mile Beach bush dsy : July 23 2026
A different day lining up. My wife has a dentist appointment early to address a broken tooth. She suggested we drive down to Shoalhave Heads - works for me
She dropped me off at shopping plaza. Enough time to walk and have breakfast. Breakfast was ho-hum - too much of a mediocre hollandaise sauce. Walk back to dental surgery offered up some old style houses
All looking a bit down at heal
Notable is most had blinds down but no Sale boards
Feels like a suburb serving its time out with big apartment blocks emerging all around
I see what is coming. This road is a block away from the main road. High school is down the road. Shipping centre and Metro up the road - heading to apartments when developers can buy enough adjacent blocks
Made our way across to main highway - stopped for coffee. Dental work was a new filling and a plan for a crown. Got to the Heads around one. Enough time to unload, make a sandwich and get om the bike
Rode down to Seven Mile Beach NP - checking in on a known blunt greenhood location. One budding
One flower open - pterostylis curta with its twisted labellum. First sighting down here this season. Colony has survived the track work.
Acianthus orchid closing up shop. One plant opens up always on a log
A modest mushroom display onna fallen tree
Clustered around the edges of the bark
V formation for these - a quite different host log
Next of the greenhoods. Length of the helmet tip is long. Could not get a photo of tbe labellum to see if it is forked
As close as a labellum shot - not enough to suggest anything other than pterostylis concinna
Did find a trim greenhood in a new spot right next to the track - bunochilus longifolia. One flower open and one on the way
Smudge of remant flower on fringed helmet orchid
A little side on
Budding greenhood
A bit further along bud - maybe nodding greenhood
Last days of pixie caps orchid
Nodding greenhood wrinkled up. This is about the spot I normally walk in from the road. Tells me what to look for off track
Keep waling another 1k steps to this fallen log. A cluster of nodding greenhoods
Twin flowers
Pterostylis nutans
Matching rosette
A tidy colony - maybe 10 flowers
On the way back - clear ID for this - shorter and wider helmet
Forked labellum is clear - pterostylis concinna
Puffer mushroom cluster
Marked off the known spot where I first saw trim greenhoods a few years back. Walked a few squares off track and found one plant - two flowers - bunochilus longifolia
Side on. Walked a few more squares and found a few more plants
Good to find plants again - none last season
Nice double header
Found a few more pterostlyis concinna on the way back. Labellum not clear
Can see the fork here.
One more side on to show the shorter helmet than the one seen earlier
Was mumbling that had not seen any violet orchids. Found one - native violet for my granddaughter Violette
A bigger walking day than was in the head. Was good to get on the bike to access the bush
Cooked my own dinner - wife still getting over dental work
