Day 3 of road trip has less driving which gives me a chance to walk a few tracks and see if there are any orchids. After disturbed night was moving by 9:30 with a biggish leg to Orbost and a choice of route point

alt

Victoria roads have wider margins than NSW mostly as they run the powerlines there. Often good orchid spots - stopped not far from Cann River at a likely spot to walk 100 metres along the road and back. This little pink flower caught my eye - no idea of ID

alt

Lots of purple fan flowers - this one has seen bug action drilling holes

alt

Location shot - park the car in a truck park and walk the margins from there. Ground is damp and enough green to suggest orchids will come soon

alt

Next side track - rainforest walk down to Mackenzie River - walked the lead in road to see if there were orchids in the eucalyptus forest

alt

Had seen this name in orchid sites website

alt

Geranium flower - not seen this before and cannot ID on iNaturalist any better than that

alt

Fringe of the rainforest and eucalyptus forest

alt

Mackenzie River

alt

Two impressive swing bridges going onto a walkway hovering over the rainforest undergrowth

alt

Multi-season mushroom stack

alt

Stopped in Orbost for coffee - shot of one of the old pubs

alt

Dutch readers will chuckle at this shop name - kut is not a polite word

alt

Stopped in Stratford at the rail trail for my lunch. Quiet spot just up from the Avon River - chose to drive on to Sale to fill up. Well the GPS had a better idea - turn right before town and skirt around a few side roads and join the Sale - Heyfield road after town - saved 25 minutes.

alt

That saving gave a chance to walk lyrebird track - maybe an orchid here

alt

Did find a colony of cryptostylis erecta orchids - no flower spikes on 10 plants

alt

Towering eucalyptus forest mixed in with the cabbage palms. Nice walk to keep awake for the last 20 kms driving through Leongatha. We will come back on the bikes for photos of the big milk processing plant in a few days

alt

This is coal country - info centre for that. Opposite our motel. Was good time to set up the front rack on the bike and then ride to town for shops and recce - one problem fixed.

alt

Fire station shot for town name.

We had dinner in the pub with a shuttle bus in. Food was solid - not great. Walked back to motel as it was a long bus wait. We ride tomorrow
