Columbina talpacoti, comúnmente conocida como tortolita rojiza o cacaíta rojiza es una especie de la familia Columbidae que se encuentra distribuida en ambientes tropicales y subtropicales como las sabanas. No obstante, esta especie se ha habituado a vivir en ambientes urbanos (ciudades), cerca de humanos.
Columbina talpacoti, commonly known as ruddy ground-dove, is a species of the Columbidae family that is distributed in tropical and subtropical environments such as savannas. However, this species has become accustomed to living in urban environments (cities), close to humans.

Anida en ramas bajas de árboles y su nido son palitos atravesados, la hembra suele poner dos huevos de color blanco de tamaño aproximado 2,4 x 1,6 centímetros. Los polluelos nacen desnudos luego de transcurridos unos 13 días y son atendidos por sus padres. Después de 4 días de nacidos empiezan a ser alimentados con alimento regurgitado por los padres. A los 13 días de haber nacido, ya con todas sus plumas, los padres los estimulan para que salgan del nido saltando de rama en rama y emitiendo sonidos, y posteriormente el día 14 abandonan el nido realizando vuelos cortos hacia el suelo y árboles cercanos hasta que finalmente vuelan a campo abierto guiados por sus padres.
It nests in low tree branches and its nest is made of crossed sticks. The female usually lays two white eggs of approximately 2.4 x 1.6 centimeters. The chicks hatch naked after about 13 days and are cared for by their parents. After 4 days of birth, they begin to be fed with food regurgitated by the parents. At 13 days after being born, already with all their feathers, the parents stimulate them to leave the nest by jumping from branch to branch and making sounds, and later on day 14 they leave the nest making short flights to the ground and nearby trees until they finally fly to the open field guided by their parents.
Generalmente, estas aves conforman grupos y cuando llegan a un sitio para alimentarse existe una jerarquía en el grupo, e incluso puede haber agresiones. Cabe destacar que aunque conforman grupos son monógamas.

El 95 % de la dieta de esta especie son semillas de las familias Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Euphorbiaceae y Malvaceae, y evitan o consumen en menor cantidad, semillas de las familias Rubiaceae, Convolvulaceae y Leguminosae, aunque esporádicamente pueden consumir insectos y caracoles, pero esta fracción animal en las dietas nunca excede el 0,5 %.
Ninety-five percent of the diet of this species are seeds of the Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Malvaceae families, and they avoid or consume in smaller quantities seeds of the Rubiaceae, Convolvulaceae and Leguminosae families, although sporadically they may consume insects and snails, but this animal fraction in their diets never exceeds 0.5 %.
En el ambiente urbano por lo general son presas de los gatos y en ambientes salvajes se ha observado que son presas de las especies de monos titíes (Callithrix jacchus y Callithrix penicillata), y aunque el comportamiento antidepredatorio de algunas especies de aves es atacar con vuelos bajos seguidos de golpes de pico o de pecho para alejar del nido al depredador, Columbina talpacoti huye del nido para desviar la atención del depredador.
In urban environments they are usually preyed upon by cats and in wild environments they have been observed to be preyed upon by marmosets monkeys species (Callithrix jacchus and Callithrix penicillata), and although the antipredatory behavior of some species of birds is to attack with low flights followed by blows of the beak or chest to keep the predator away from the nest, Columbina talpacoti flees the nest to divert the predator's attention.
