People like to think that we humans are rational creatures, but that's just a half truth. We're rational creatures, but too many times we give into emotions and fall for the hype, hysteria and keeping up with the Joneses.
Pokémon recently released their 30th anniversary celebration set on 9/16 and it's an excellent example. The rumors around the high pull rates have circled Reddit and online forums for months. Alongside that has been the rumor that the set will be "printed into the ground" so that supply isn't an issue. Look anywhere online and you'll see prices are ridiculous.
MSRP for an Elite Trainer Box is $59.99. It contains 11 booster packs, 2 promo cards, 65 card sleeves, 6 damage counter dice, a coin and some other supplies for battling. You can't find it in stock anywhere for that.
Online prices vary, but are around $120-200+.
The stupid thing is people are paying that. They're paying over $16/pack for something that should only cost $5/pack because they can't wait. They've got to have it now. They can't be the only ones not opening packs.
If they would just wait another month or so, then two more supply drops would hit shelves. They'd be able to get product at MSRP, but they can't wait. These people are capable of reason, but they allow their emotions to cloud their judgment. They'll pay 3x the price for the same shiny cardboard as everyone else and be no better off.
Next time you're considering buying something, wait and come back to it a week or two later. If you still want it, then go ahead and buy it. If you don't, you saved yourself money and buyer's remorse.
